General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSaturday evening, I bought a 'Smithsonian' magazine when we were at the grocery store.
In today's mail, I received a subscription offer for... the Smithsonian. Preferred Senior Offer.
The had my correct name, address and the Senior part correct.
For some reason, I do not think this was a coincidence. In fact this is really kinda scary. I don't normally get subscription offers for any magazine I buy there.
I have never subscribed to the Smithsonian either.
You don't supposed they are in cahoots with the NSA?

(25,592 posts)This is the first time this happened. And yes.
Otherwise I don't see how the two can be related.

(68,644 posts)I don't know if it's a coincidence or not. I've never even seen that magazine in a grocery store or bookstore.

(3,145 posts)it would be physically possible for a magazine offer to arrive in your mail box less than 48 hours after you bought the magazine.

(101,306 posts)If you bought the mag on Saturday evening, even if a computer generated the offer over the weekend, what's the earliest it could get a letter into the postal system? Monday morning. But you received it on Monday.
I'd suggest that someone - credit card company, AARP (perhaps - they know you're a senior), someone else you buy something from with details - had enough information to guess you could be a Smithsonian-type person. If the offer had arrived on Tuesday, it'd look more like it has been kicked off by the purchase.

(16,844 posts)the Smithsonian staff has a rather aggressive marketing department. I got a free subscription to the magazine many years ago and I still get mail and email from them. Sometimes they send me a freebie. You'd think by now that they would have given up, but they keep at it. It's a good magazine, but I don't read magazines anymore unless I'm in a waiting room and I don't have a book with me.

(20,729 posts)the sale info, just don't see how the offer would get to your house so fast.
unless the magazine companies get the data instantly, as it happens, & instantly send out the offers.
