Takes me back to this TV Guide cover during the original "Star Trek" series - probably latter first season. It was a photo of Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock. And the headline caption read: "Is it Sexy to be Smart?" As I recall, even though I was in high school and minimally sentient, there were two leading men in that series, each a wholly different type with a large healthy following. Shatner's Captain Kirk was the handsome-macho-leading-man, while Spock was the Nerd King whose cerebral, logic-only persona made him tempting to many female viewers (many of us love that character who can't be melted because of this secret feeling that "ahh, but it's I alone who can reach him" . To a later generation it would have been depicted as "Team Kirk" versus "Team Spock." I was on the Spock team. It is INDEED sexy to be smart! No wonder I married the man I married!

(10,129 posts)I think Dr. Amy Mainzer is sexier.
(Tho, technically she's an Astronomer not an Astrophysicist.)

(17,857 posts)and watching it with my daughters. I had just turned 17 when the original came out. My daughters are now 15 (soon to be 16) and 17. While I don't watch much science fact shows anymore on television (it is at too basic a level for me), I am excited about the presentation of the new series. Both my daughters know much more about science than I did at their age, but I think they will appreciate it as well.
Tyson is the next generation's Sagan. We are fortunate to have him and the other producers of the new Cosmos including Sagan's widow.

Keep yer church stuff OUT of science class. It belongs in church and Sunday school. It does NOT belong with the sciences.
If the assholes keep it up, one fine day some of them are gonna wake up and wonder why Americans can't compete anymore, why we can't think anymore ('cause we're just taking it all on FAITH, you see), why we can't reason anymore, why we can't grasp advanced concepts anymore, but we sure can fumble with our rosary beads and drop to our knees with eyes closed and arms lifted high up. I guess their idea of "American exceptionalism" is America as a third-rate country with 29th-rate students, while the brains all come from somewhere else.

But for any who might be interested, he has a podcast called StarTalk Radio that comes out on Sundays. He discusses a variety of topics with some interesting guests, like Jon Stewart and Max Brooks. It's about 45 minutes long. I highly recommend listening to it if you have some free time.
