Just watched "One Bright Shining Moment" a documentary about George McGovern

and a quote of his stuck with me:

“The highest patriotism is not a blind acceptance of official policy, but a love of one's country deep enough to call her to a higher standard.”

This quote was actually part of a criticism of a fellow Democrat and then current President Johnson regarding the escalation of the Vietnam war.

I cannot recommend the film enough

I was young, don't remember much, but I am ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN he was the last American statesman.

"Don't blame me, I voted for McGovern" bumper stickers were everywhere.

And the absolutely batshit insane astonishing fact I can't quite wrap my mind around?

Nixon was a liberal, by today's standards.

We've fallen VERY far.
