An analogy to what happened in Egypt

Let's imagine that the Republicans' obstructionism worked even better and they managed to sabotage the economy even more than they did causing another crash. Sarah Palin opts to run, and thanks to the crash is actually able to defeat Obama 52/48, coattailing in a Republican Senate and increasing the Republican House Majority. Despite the narrow victory the first things President Palin does is try to consolidate her rule, passing laws and making judicial appointments allowing her to shove everything she wants through, changes the laws to give her greater control over the media, greater control over elections, and even tries to shove in Constitutional amendments with no Democratic input that would allow her to rule indefinitely and without real opposition.

A bunch of liberal/progressive groups fight back and hold constant protests in DC and around the country. Palin just dispatches police thugs to beat up and disperse them, and even before police intervention allows Tea Party thugs to beat up and threaten protesters with no action against them. She also completely ignores Tea Party militias forming and arming themselves all around the country instead focusing exclusively on crushing the progressive opposition. Opposition grows and polls show the majority wanting her gone now, but she just digs her heels in more while continuing to also help the Tea Party grow and grow.

A bunch of army figures decide they can't put up with this anymore and give Palin 48 hours to cut back and enter talks with the progressive opposition. Palin completely ignores them and refuses. After these 48 hours Palin is forcibly removed from power. In response the armed Tea Party militias start responding not in peaceful protest but with violence, kill a few progressive leaders and start threatening a terrorist campaign.

That's basically what happened.

Not a good analogy at all. You can't compare an established democracy with a fledging one. snagglepuss Jul 2013 #1

A better analogy might be what would Americans in the 18th centaury have done if after the American revolution a group of Royalists were elected by a slim margin and sought to undo the Constitution starting with the separation of church and state. Would they have sat back watching Royalists destroy what they fought for?
