..on civility.
Websters defines the word civil in a few ways. The particular use of the word I was looking for was the second definition; adequate in courtesy and politeness. Adequate is defined as barely sufficient or satisfactory. So, the idea of being civil is basically being polite and courteous
.at a minimum level.
I am beginning to believe some of us cannot even accomplish that.
I think we have lost some civility in our culture. Some would say we are no longer even a civilized society. I would not go that far, but I believe we are in the infancy stages of that predicament. If you need examples, scroll back a few posts and read the anger, emotion and insults on a few of our posts, starting with the Rottweiler post
.YIKES!
Somewhere along the way, likely with the emergence of computers, threads, blogs and keyboards
.we have become a tad uncivilized. Whereas in prior times the individual person perhaps did not have a loud voice
.or maybe did not have the platform to have that voice heard
..that is not where we are now. Today, everyone has an opinion and come hell or high water, they are going to tell you what they think.
Now to the meat and potatoes of this post
..We need to be more civil to each other. Remember
it is the minimum we can do. The minimum. You and I may disagree on politics, social issues, or the redeeming qualities of singing Suspicious Minds while in the shower. Thats okay; however, we need to do it with civility. There is no need for swearing, threats or YELLING. You make your point, Ill make mine and we move forward. If our views are something which need settled in order to move ahead, then we find common ground and move. It really is simple, as long as we are civil. When we add swearing, anger and exaggerations
.we fail. If you need an example, look at Washington D.C.
On this page, as long as I am here (and that will be a while), we will act with decorum and be civil. If you swear, are vulgar or make threats
.see you later. I like a variety of views and opinions, because those allow me to check my own views for validity. Thats huge for me, because I am always willing to learn. If there is a view different from yours, counter it with civility. The minimum politeness.
Now, just so you are all aware
.Calling a criminal a mope is very civil for me, personally. It is the minimum in civility and much better than what I REALLY want to call them.
