(268,930 posts)My mother thought I was scantily clad in the minis we wore back then, but Steve Biko, MLK, JFK, Mandela, Fidel and even Helen Reddy (I am woman) woke us up. Youngsters are waking up regardless of their preferred choice of dress. They'll be singing this.

(20,729 posts)just a fan video set to the music, i'll withdraw the criticism, and just say i think the song is lyrically weak & doesn't really make much sense.

i couldn't watch it all the way through. the song lyrics are dumb (you broke up with me, i feel bad, but i'm strong and it's a woman's world...if you're still young & hot, i guess).
nah, i didn't feel any feminist anthem there, sorry to all those who feel different.

(84,711 posts)that are sort of sterotypical even though from 30's kind of ads.
On the Other hand...Malaise downthread makes a point. It's hard to know what catches on today with the 20 Somethings (if that's who she's targeting). Still...the Pin Ups bother me because my generation fought so hard against being seen as "sex objects" and that most young women don't really look like that these days...out there in the rest of America.
But...who knows...it might inspire many.

(20,729 posts)are kind of the proof of that.
I think there's a bit more thought, actually, in the James Brown antecedent, as rather than the message "I'm strong, I don't need you" there's at least the claim of male relationship to women & children, even though the 'man the maker' is dated. But man's world, woman's world, it's just pop ephemera and there's no (human) world without both. Dunno, it just seems superficial & trite to me. I'm strong = it's a woman's world = doesn't follow. I like cher, her life is feminist, but her song choices? nah.
This is a mans world
But it would be nothing,nothing
Without a women or a girl
You see, man made the car
To take us over the road
Man made the train
To carry the heavy load
Man made the electrolight
To take us out of the dark
Man made the boat full of water
Like noah made the arc
This is a mans,mans,mans world
But it would be nothing, nothing
Without a women or a girl
Man thinks about little bit of baby girls and a baby boys
Man make them happy
Cos man make them toys
And after man make everything
Everything he can
You know that man makes money
To buy from other man
This is a mans world
But it would be nothing, nothing
Not one little thing
Without a women or a girl
He's lost in the wilderness
He's lost in bitterness

(84,711 posts)Sadly most young females wouldn't know James Brown...and many wouldn't know or care about Cher.
It will probably be someone new and totally different that catches their interest.
But, if this crap keeps up with Repugs...I hope the new inspiration for them comes quickly! There's NO TIME TO WASTE!
