"Randy left this earth doing what he loved most: hiking in his most favorite mountain range in the world," the family statement said. "Randy's passing is a reminder to all of us to live every day to its fullest, just as he did."

When saddened by an unexpected death, I recall the lyric from Dave Mallett's song Long Goodbye.

Some days shine so brightly
Gold dust in a pan
Some days you hold so lightly
They go slippin' right through your hands
And those of us who are so lucky
Get to grow old before we die

Sometimes it seems this old life
Ain't nothin' but a long goodbye

Perhaps, up until the last moment, Randy's was a gold dust day.

Did he have a heart attack? Did he get lost and die of thirst, hunger, or exposure?
