Rand Paul: "Humans Will Marry Non Humans Without DOMA"

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul (R) on Wednesday worried the defeat of the Defense of Marriage Act could lead to the legalization of human-animal marriages.

“I think this is the conundrum and gets back to what you were saying in the opening — whether or not churches should decide this,” Paul said on Glenn Beck’s radio show Wednesday morning. “But it is difficult because if we have no laws on this people take it to one extension further. Does it have to be humans? You know, I mean. So there really are — the question is what social mores, can some social mores be part of legislation?”

“Historically, we did at the state legislative level, we did allow for some social mores to be part of it,” the Kentucky Republican continued. “Some of them were said to be for health reasons and otherwise, but I’m kind of with you, I see the thousands-of-year tradition of the nucleus of the family unit. I also see that economically, if you just look without any kind of moral periscope and you say, what is it that is the leading cause of poverty in our country? It’s having kids without marriage. The stability of the marriage unit is enormous and we should not just say oh we’re punting on it, marriage can be anything.”

Paul had previously said he opposed DOMA, a federal law that prohibited same-sex couples from receiving federal marriage rights and protections. However, he only opposed the law because it potentially gave the Supreme Court an opening to legalize same-sex marriages nationwide.

The Kentucky Tea Partier and his Democratic opponent argue about Paul's college days and an old prank kidnapping

Rand Paul’s debate last night with Democratic opponent Jack Conway turned very ugly. Conway has begun running ads that reference Paul’s now-infamous membership in a “secret” college group called the NoZe Brotherhood. The Brotherhood was dedicated to “blasphemy,” and they once staged a joke “kidnapping” of a female student, whom they “forced” to worship an idol they called the Aqua Buddha.

All the story shows is that in college, Rand Paul probably enjoyed smoking weed. (And he may not have taken his faith all that seriously.) The woman says the entire thing was “weird” but not especially threatening.*

So at his debate last night, Rand went off on Conway for referencing the incident. Paul went all-out on the aggrieved outrage. He accused Conway of “attacking a man’s religious beliefs to gain higher office.” He said Conway should be ashamed of himself...

“Why did he freely join a group known for mocking, for making fun of people with faith?” Conway asked during the debate. “When is it ever a good idea to tie up a woman and ask her to kneel before a false idol, your god, which you call Aqua Buddha?”

Today, the Washington Post’s Greg Sargent got an exclusive with the woman, who totally vindicated Paul by saying she was never kidnapped! Except that her story did not change, at all — the facts of it are the same — she just doesn’t consider it a proper, illegal kidnapping.

The Paul campaign, obviously, was thrilled to see that false and salacious “kidnapping” story debunked, because words don’t mean anything anymore, which is how he was able to deny “illegally kidnapping” someone while never addressing the actual incident, and now claim that that nonexistent charge was “completely shot down” by a reiteration of what he actually did do.

Also, uh:

In our conversation, she elaborated that she doesn’t want her name in print because she’s a clinical psychologist who works with former members of the military, some of whom are Tea Partyers, and fears that complicating Paul’s Senate run could put her in danger.

These people pay lip-service to liberty and rights, but their actual positions never match. Abortion, gay marriage, and so on? OH THOSE ARE STATES RIGHTS ISSUES. If the FUCKING hypocrites ACTUALLY GAVE ONE RATS ASS ABOUT LIBERTY they would fucking want all of this to be national. I don't care about his objectives, his glasses, his facial stubble, or his manner of speaking, or his past support for this candidate or that.

I can see joke marriages where someone prints up a certificate saying they married their dog or box turtle, but ain't no way a county clerk who's job depends on taxpayer dollars is going to accept a pawprint on an official, noterized state document...

As for the IRS accepting John and Fluffy (with no social security number or official birth certificate) Smith as "married" for tax purposes due to no DOMA? Did it ever happen before DOMA in the 200+ years of United States history?

A marriage is a contract, and legally you can't enter into a contract unless you are capable of understanding the terms of the contract. Non-humans will not be able to do so, and will not be able to sign the marriage license, and thus would always be unable to get married.

Call me old-fashioned, and even conservative if you must, but as the father of two boys and two girls, I'm not able to think of human beings marrying republicans. Species marrying other species could be a dangerous thing.

As far as marriage equality among human beings, I am absolutely for it. I am not huge on thanking politicians for doing the correct thing, and so I think the recent USSC ruling is positive, but would prefer that it allows those whom were denied human rights be able to sue for damages. And I'm not joking about that. Where the fuck do the shitheads like Rand Paul get off, denying people the right to participate fully in our society? I think that they should pay, and not just on election day.

But true libertarians, while I disagree with them on many issues, have been in the forefront of opposing government intrusions into social issues such as gay marriage. It would be a true libertarian's view that if two people of the same gender want to marry each other that is nobody's business but their own. Rand Paul is an opportunistic politician and certainty not a libertarian.

Fundies normally don't warm up to libertarians, because their orientation is command-and-control, and libertarianism challenges that notion. However, Paul knows that his only shot is to win the nomination in 2016, when Rethugs with better pedigrees will have the sense to stay out of Hillary's way, and then hope she stumbles before reaching the finish line.

Sucking up to the snake handlers needs to be done to accomplish this. Right now, they're very, very disturbed about this ruling, and he's moved quickly to assure them that he's on their side.
