(Reuters) - Madonna has slammed British rapper M.I.A.'s offensive finger gesture during her Super Bowl show as juvenile, negative and out of place.

(101,722 posts)FWIW, I agree that MIA's attention-getting gesture was juvenile, though I hardly would find it grounds for offense or any action to be taken. That said, Madonna invited them (and the other back up performers) to participate on her show.. Pretty shitty for MIA to do this, IMO, knowing it would blow back on her.

It's disgusting, it's stone age, and it's unacceptable - especially on a progressive forum. You really should reconsider your words and your attitude.

(13,615 posts)There is a difference between two ladies (one of whom actually came out afterword) kissing and the digitis infamis. However, to be fair, the Super Bowl picked madonna because they realized they had gotten too conversative after the infamous "wardrobe malfunction." This might make the powers thaty be bring in someone really safe for a while...snoozer bowl.
To be fair to MIA though, the idea that someone who has masturbated on stage, burned crosses, and torn the puerto rican flag can get all holy is a bit thin....let's face it, anyone who thought this was going to be a G rated show deserved a lobotomy, as shock rock is what Madonna has done for 30 years. It is like expecting Kiss not to spit blood, or Elton John not to wear a costume and play a piano. All MIA did is follow the same patented blueprint that Madonna herself did. The real story is that, for modern female rock, going the Madonna route IS the conservative, established route to stardom: a Joni Mitchell would not be allowed NEAR a studio today.

It's going to cost NBC money. It's going to cost the NFL money. It's going to cost Madonna money and it's going to cost MIA money because I doubt she ever, ever, EVER gets an invitation like that ever again. I hope it was worth it.

(22,340 posts)because a minor rapper flipped the bird at the halftime show. Get a grip.
The FCC did not drop the Jackson nipple thing without any fines. In fact, they levied a fine of over $500,000 on CBS and its stations. The case has gone up and down through the courts and is on its way back to the Supreme Court. While the fines have been struck down twice by the court of appeals, CBS hasn't gotten the money back and won't unless and until the Supremes rule. In addition, CBS has spent several million dollars in legal fees fighting the fines at the FCC and in the courts.
I do agree that the country needs to grow up, but you have your facts wrong about the Janet Jackson "wardrobe malfunction"

(41,692 posts)On November 24, 2004, Viacom paid out $3.5 million to settle outstanding indecency complaints and stated that it would challenge the $550,000 penalty related to the incident.[13] The Parents Television Council has frequently criticized the appeal because they have claimed hypocrisy in CBS's immediate apology in the days following the Super Bowl.[52] In March 2006, the FCC affirmed that the Super Bowl halftime show was indecent,[53] so CBS paid the FCC's issued fine in July 2006 in order to take their appeal against their fine to federal court.[54] CBS appealed the fine on September 17 at the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia.[55] On July 21, 2008, that court ruled[56] in favor of CBS, throwing out the FCC's fine on the grounds that the enforcement involved a significant deviation from prior practice that wasn't announced as a clear policy change.[14] On May 4, 2009, however, the Supreme Court vacated and remanded the case back to the Third Circuit for reconsideration in light of the previously decided Federal Communications Commission v. Fox Television Stations (2009).[16]
On November 2, 2011, the Third Circuit Court ruled 2-1 that its earlier decision was correct.[57]

(42,375 posts)You said, and I quote,"the FCC dropped the Jackson nipple thing without any fines."
I said, no, the FCC imposed fines, CBS paid them, and then challenged the fines in court, where they have won victories in the appeals courts, but the case is still pending.
That is exactly what your second post says. Your first post was wrong. My post was correct. The FCC did not, and has not, dropped the "Janet Jackson nipple thing." They are still defending the decision which will now be decided by the Supreme Court.
trumad
(41,692 posts)The money will be returned.
onenote
(42,375 posts)The first court decision arising from the Janet Jackson nipple thing was issued by the 3rd Circuit in 2008 and it found in favor of CBS. The FCC appealed to the Supreme Court and in 2009 the High Court vacated the 3rd Circuit's decision and sent the case back to the 3rd circuit (not exactly a win for CBS). Last November, the 3rd Circuit again ruled in favor of CBS and the FCC is again appealing that decision to the Supreme Court, which probably won't decide the case for another year.
You really need to read your own posts more carefully.
Finally, it remains the case that your original statement that the FCC dropped the matter without imposing fines was utterly incorrect. And it also remains true that if (as I expect will be the case) CBS ultimately prevails and is able to recover the half million dollar fine it paid, the company will never recover the several million dollars in legal fees it has incurred in fighting this case through the FCC and the courts for over seven years (the original order fining CBS was issued in 2004).

(25 posts)That Madonna is obviously a hypocrite because she posed naked for a sex book once? It's called CONTEXT, chum. In a Superbowl performance where young children are part of the viewing audience, it was INAPPROPRIATE to flip the bird. It reminds me of the young people I see (hear) who say "mothereffing this and that" in public in front of children, seniors and God. No understanding of social decorum, no social context. A sex book in the hands of a mature adult is not bad or wrong.

She's all high and mighty now with her new found fake English voice inflection.....
So when she made out with Britany at the Grammys...guess what...young kids were watching and some parents were offended.
Of course they were homophobic idiots who were offended but ...nonetheless ...they were offended.
By thie way...when Madonna was posing in the nude on the side of the road...do you think some parents and kids may have been driving by?

(20,683 posts)then * it I'm too old fashion cause in my day even Johnny Cash could flip the bird. Being a rebel rock n roller means singing let's spend the night together not lets spend some time together. Somewhere Jim Morrison is happy that the spirit of rebellion and youth is alive in the non-product placement world of music. Madonna was always to image and commercial for my music taste and this once again shows she more product oriented. Give me a singer not afraid to give out a finger any day.

(13,615 posts)It will get publicity for all involved, ESPECIALLY Madonna, because in the current climate, there is no such thing as bad publicity. This is an age where reality TV makes Madonna look like a nun. I am just suspicious because I have seen Madonna and other performers pull this "outrage" thing, especially after Justin T. and Janet J. talked abouit "wardrobe malfunctions." Did anyone really think she was going to do an actual G-rated show? Did she herself think she was going to do a G-rated show? Sorry Madge, Joni Mitchell you are not.
All I say is that the whole thing stinks of funny buisness. It's no secret that Madonna is trying to clean up her image because she wants to go into directing. I honestly wonder how much of this could really have been accidental, especially coming from someone who, to give her credit, is known to plan every gesture like swiss clockwork.

(13,615 posts)everything to do with the hypocrisy. Sadly, the shock jock way of stardom has become the conservative, established way for women to get ahead in the biz. It might have been libertaing back in 1987, but it is old, old hat now, and for Madge to act self righteous sounds an awful lot like the whining Justin T. did over the "wardrobe malfunction" that we all know was planned.
What it boild down to is this: yesterday's rebel becomes today's establishment figure, especially when they rely on shock value. As far as LGBT role models go, many have come along: the Ellens, the Rosies, the Rachels, the Ruperts, all of whom are known more for their SKILL and TALENT then the fact that they can freak out the mundanes. Granted, shock will always have value, as MIA will soon reapt the fruits of, but the truth is, this flap has nothing to do with age, and everything to do wuith the fact that we are all just a little bit more savvy and jaded knowing the way the media tries to make issues to lead us around with.
Madonna will not be hurt at all by this, nor will MIA, nor will the Super Bowl. All will make a load of cash, much more than most DUer's will ever, ever come close to making.
It has nothign to do with anything important, like seniors being forced to eat dog food, or people losing their homes, or people getting killed by drones, it is all a distraction from these things, and Madonna has gotten paid very well for being just that, a distraction. The wheels that grins flesh will roll, and if some LGBT or feminists or their adversaries get into a fight over her, the powers that be will smiles and go "so much the better" as that will make it weasier for them to grind ALL OF US into their sausage, by that time our own opinions and differences will not matter much at all.
I will add that, if she was really buying her own propaganda abouthow MIA was nad because she was so "negative", themn it is a sign that she is no longer the sly charlatan she once was, but has instead grown demented. That has nothing to do with age, and everything to do with getting weak. Really, does she not realize that if she was picked for the Super Bowl, that the same GOP powers that be, who sponsor the Super Bowl, see her as less of a threat?
