Occupy Cal tents return to UC Berkeley

BERKELEY -- Occupy Cal members were back at UC Berkeley on Thursday, setting up tents on Sproul Plaza in the same spot where police forcibly removed them last fall.

Five tents went up in the afternoon along with a giant red mushroom sculpture.

Graduate student Shannon Ikebe, 23, said the university has not answered any of the group's demands about stopping tuition hikes and the practice of privatizing university functions. He called a review of police conduct last fall, in which officers were taped beating students during a similar camp out, a sham.

"Nothing has been done," Ikebe said. "We're hoping this action today reignites the movement. This is just the beginning." ........(more)
