New Hampshire Republican proposes end to lunch break law

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2012/02/09/new-hampshire-republican-proposes-end-to-lunch-break-law/

A Republican State Representative in New Hampshire has found a way to create a new front in the war on workers, proposing a bill that would repeal the state’s law requiring that workers get a 30-minute lunch break after five hours of labor.

State Rep. J.R. Hoell (R), a supporter of libertarian-leaning Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) for president, told a New Hampshire General Court committee this week that he believes the law is unnecessary because it is in employers’ interest to treat workers well, according to The Concord Monitor.

I know for one place my work place already dictate EVERY asspect of my life at work. I have to "request" an away from desk whenever I need to go to the bathroom. So calls stop coming to me and I can go and take care of business. THEY stop my calls so I can take my lunch break instead of allowing me to stop my own calls. So If I am suppose to go to lunch at 12:30 but the supervisor doesn't put me away from desk until 12:45 or whenever things "slow down" OH, Well.

It is humiliating in my mind.

On both counts.... I once was a leadperson in a woodshop and the prior lead also demand everyone get "permission" to go to the bathroom. When I took over I told all the "adults" that they didn't have to ask... just go. We weren't in 1st grade anymore.

In my experience I have found that if you treat people as adults and with respect you will improve production and quality as the workers want to do well for you.

The congressman is correct though... it is in the best interest of the company to treat it's employees well. However, that doesn't mean they will. Some companies don't care if they lose good employees as they just call a staffing agency to get another expendable worker that will put in about 6 month before they also see the hand writing on the wall and quit. This goes on until someone comes along that is in dire need of a job and will put up with everything to keep a paycheck coming in. I have seen it many times... as I have had to quit jobs because if how the company treated it's employees. They just didn't care as there is an endless pool of workers willing to take the job.
