They enjoy the role of the thorn in the side.
If they had the WH, they'd have to come up with something to do, as opposed to oppose. War is always an option with the GOP because it focuses the attention away from domestic problems, but the population may not have an appetite for another one so soon.
As long as they retain the House, and have a posse of Blue Dog Dems to work with in the Senate they can continue their work of stifling progress all the while blaming the lack of progress on the WH. They know a Lame Duck with no House or Senate won't do too much damage improvement anyways.
I think they've given up on it awhile ago. They are saving their big dogs until 2014 when they have a chance with fresh Dem meat to go against. Christie, Jeb Bush, .....

(8,556 posts)They've been doing this flavor of the month dance since last summer. And just about every candidate has had their shot. Bachmann, Perry, Cain, Gingrich, and now Santorum. The only one left is Paul and he's just not somebody the Republicans will rally around. In the end, after all of this song and dance, it's going to be Romney just like everybody has been predicting the whole time.

It's like when Jerry & Pat would get together and talk on the 7000 club. In their secure, enclosed environment, they'd get too comfy and spew forth atrocious crap that horrified the world (like gays caused 9/11). Santorum had a little win win and now thinks he's a huge success, everyone wants to bask in his wisdom, and he can state his too clever positions because he thinks he has Joementum, or something.
How clueless and childish can one be? This is not presidential material.
madokie
(51,076 posts)None of them are up to the task that lies ahead. Plus they want to tar and feather this President and haven't been able too yet so yes I think they are very capable of doing just as you suggest. The last thing the old white man club wants is a successful Black President cause in their minds, what little they have that is, there would be more to follow. They will do anything to stop that from happening you can bet on that too. You want to see that old white man club go ballistic all we have to do is elect a Woman President. Heads would be exploding all over the place
Just a reminder I'm mostly an old white man myself but I don't ascribe to that group that I'm referring to mind set.

(4,847 posts)Pewesta (sp) was one of the first casualties in the iraq war. She went down firing. Lynch was captured in the same incident. I have a book about the history of women in battle; and women can be some very vicious fighters. The catholic church had to pass an edict twice to keep women (celtic) from fighting. In celtic societies, both men and women fought.
In one of my college history classes, we discussed women who fought in the civil war. Women who dressed like men and fought.
To me, it doesn't matter if you are a man or woman. It depends if you have that "warrior", fighting spirit. Just like not all women are nurturers and there are some men who do a better job at nurturing.
With their concepts of allowing robber barons free reign, child labor, getting rid of workers' rights and wanting slave labor; I think every damn one of them want the "good old" nineteenth century robber baron days. Where women and children are mere chattel.

(14,180 posts)you read Halberstam's The Coldest Winter? It's a pretty stirring account of what the soldiers had to go through after the Chinese came in. A bit weak on Truman's shit-canning of MacArthur, imo, but still worth the time.
My Dad landed at Inchon with the USMC and was subsequently wounded there, but I was not even a glimmer in his eye at that point so everything I've learned about the war has been from hearing him talk and reading about it.

(2,529 posts)Doesn't that idiot realize that in urban warfare like in Iraq, there is no frontline? That women are just as much a target as men and have to jump in and join in firefights? I was an Army nurse and my daughter was a Coast Guard instructor on detecting hazardous and contaminated substances and possible WMDs. No one was exempt from sniper fire; not cooks, supply clerks (like Lynch and Piestewa), chaplain assistants, no one! Women might be able to join Spec Ops like the Rangers and SEALs someday, but it doesn't mean that in the recent wars, we haven't already technically been "frontline."

Each of them was a bona fide member of the "killer elite", fortunately the demonstrations I received were for the most part friendly ones. Any man who holds Santorums illusions about the capabilities of women is a damn fool. And thank you for your service.

(28,939 posts)Women have always been in combat, sometimes even as combatants. According to my husband, retired ammo man, there's no such thing as a bullet or bomb that stops in mid flight because its target is a woman.
my mum survived WWII bombing when she was a child - funny how these repukes who care so much about the "emotions" of women in combat don't give a crap about children when they endorse war
sarge43
(28,939 posts)Rickie got on his bicycle and backpeddled. Seems it's men who have the emotional issues. Waiting for him to cite one example where a man endangered his unit or the mission because he rescued a woman. As for the physical strength, some women don't have it, but then neither do some men. Give it up, Rick. These arguments were old ten years ago and more.

While US and Canadian women served as mechanics and other support/logistics troops, UK women also operated anti aircraft guns inside the UK.
Soviet women drove tanks, flew fighter planes, worked as snipers just like Israeli and Canadian women do today.
When I was at Prince Sultan AB, I saw USAF, UK-RAF, and French Air Force women manning machine gun nests guarding where I worked. Women were in my Combat Camera unit. I have no clue where Ricky and Newt are getting their information.
