Nurses union eviscerates Newt in a statement

I enjoyed this immensely.

http://www.bizjournals.com/sacramento/prnewswire/press_releases/California/2011/12/15/SF24018

WASHINGTON, Dec. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The nation's largest organization of registered nurses today ridiculed Republican Presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's attempts to excuse his ethics violations and callous treatment of his wives because he was feeling the same exhaustion experienced by many nurses.

"I know nurses. I work with nurses every day. You, Mr. Gingrich, are not a nurse," said RoseAnn DeMoro, executive director of the 170,000 member National Nurses United, a non-partisan organization of the 99 percent which has not endorsed any candidate for President.

"I'm exhausted 80% of the time," Karen Higgins, RN, NNU co-president and an intensive care nurse told Talking Points Memo. "I would never turn around and say my bad behavior is excused because I'm exhausted."

"Of course nurses are exhausted after a long shift of taking care of our patients, but it is incredibly offensive for Newt Gingrich to suggest that we would ever use that as an excuse to hurt our families or break the law," said Deb Nault, RN, associate executive director for Nursing Practice at the Michigan Nurses Association.

"There's a reason that nurses are voted the most honest and ethical professionals in the country, year after year. It's no surprise that members of Congress are at the very bottom, with politicians like Newt Gingrich trying to present themselves as something they're not and refusing to accept responsibility for their behavior. My fellow nurses and I have a message for Mr. Gingrich: Take care of your own dirty laundry and leave us out of it," Nault said.

"The essence of nursing is compassion, caring for others, and community," said DeMoro. "There is absolutely nothing in Newt Gingrich's reprehensible and brutish personal behavior that suggests any traits that personify the nursing profession. In fact, when Gingrich abandoned his wife while she was in a hospital bed with cancer, it was nurses who were taking care of her."

Many of Gingrich's political stances today, "continue to represent the antithesis of what it means to be a nurse, such as his idea to turn back the clock 100 years with child labor. Nurses have fought to improve social conditions for everyone, not return our children to backbreaking labor."

Just admit that at the end of your shift, you are all finding your way into beds unoccupied by your spouse. Newt's a transitional, historic figure, defending civilization against the onslaught of, uh, uncivilization, you know. As such, he knows - KNOWS! - what it's like to come off a long shift and be looking for the some physical comfort not involving one's spouse. Just admit that you all do it, otherwise Newt looks like a Grade-A fuckhead, and is that what you really want? I thought you nurses were supposed to be all compassionate and stuff, and here you are letting Newt look this foolish. For shame!

.... who were taking care of her."

Well said......

I have so much respect for our nurses who tirelessly and yes, often tired & exhausted after a long busy shift, put patients and their well being first at the sacrifice of themselves.....especially ER nurses....in the face of fatigue and crisis, they know how to be calm, triage, prioritize and save lives.....

Newt Gingrich may have just given the American public the most important reason why he is NOT QUALIFIED and SHOULD NOT BE ELECTED to the office of Presidency which is one of the most tiring, exhausting & stressful jobs and puts the POTUS in a position where in the face of big decisions, often on & with little sleep require that they dont "screw" around....

How dare Newt Gingrich who is the poster boy for narcissism & selfishness try to use nurses as an example and excuse for his revolting behaviour....

Meanwhile, Newt should talk to another Republican that cheats on his wife and decided to take on nurses......our former CA Governor Arnold the Sperminator...

Their cruelty has burst all bounds of decency in the past decade.

And there have been waves of right wing propaganda aimed at engineering compassion out of Americans' world view, from stirring up resentment in the declining middle class against "welfare queens" in Reagan's era and deriding the desperately unemployed in our post-Bush-Crash era, to cheering about letting a young person die because they didn't purchase health insurance they could not afford, to filibustering so many bills that would put hundreds of thousands back to work just to make the economy tank to defeat the latest Democratic president.

I even think there has been a deliberate effort to engineer compassion out of our fellow citizens through enthralling us with TV shows about people conspiring against one another and pretending they are friends to win a million dollars, to admiring rude people acting very meanly, to the latest oh so funny ads about one-upping Santa on the gifts they select.

If they can just get more of us into the Survival of the Fittest --cruel is cool-- mode, we won't try to re-establish the application of our tax dollars to helping our fellow citizens in need and improving the infrastructure here and getting green energy and environmental clean up going in a big way.

Thank goodness the Nurses are standing up against these trends. And the Occupy movement has also called out the Republican Cruelty of the Top One Percent.

The whole statement, from beginning to end, totally nails Gingrich. I really loved this part:

"Many of Gingrich's political stances today, "continue to represent the antithesis of what it means to be a nurse, such as his idea to turn back the clock 100 years with child labor. Nurses have fought to improve social conditions for everyone, not return our children to backbreaking labor.""

Tell that to a judge and jury after a grueling shift when a nurse has to be on her toes and mentally sharp for every patient at every minute...no matter the circumstances. No excuses, no pass.

Sorry you're exhausted, Newt. I suggest you retire...to a nursing home.
