Catholic League Poised To Go To War With Obama Over Mandatory Birth Control Payments

LBJ made churches tax -exempt for keeping out of politics.

Doesnt this make it time to reverse that law?!! NOW??

CBS New York

Catholic leaders upped the ante Monday, threatening to challenge the Obama administration over a provision of the new health care law that would require all employers, including religious institutions, to pay for birth control.

Catholic leaders are furious and determined to harness the voting power of the nation’s 70 million Catholic voters to stop a provision of President Barack Obama’s new heath car reform bill that will force Catholic schools, hospitals and charities to buy birth control pills, abortion-producing drugs and sterilization coverage for their employees.

“Never before, unprecedented in American history, for the federal government to line up against the Roman Catholic Church,” said Catholic League head Bill Donohue.

“This is going to be fought out with lawsuits, with court decisions, and, dare I say it, maybe even in the streets,” Donohue said.

To arrest pedophile priests. They are disgusting. Take away their tax exemption status and let them do what they want.

I grew up Catholic and have long since left the church. I have no recollection of this sort of political warfare though it probably was always there. I remember getting JFK cards in church as a youngster so they must have been politically involved then and I just did not pay attention.

ie the actual church members, or even the hierarchy. It's like saying Ann Coulter is the Republican Party. There may be a few extremists who agree with him, but he's mainly a self-promoting asshole who does it to get donations from gullible extremists.

anti woman insurance program should be allowed because of religious freedom then why shouldn't they also argue that they have the right to fire people for being gay? Aren't both contraception and homosexuality against their religion?

It's hard to quote that line for the title but you get my drift. What the RCC is really upset about, is that the Obama admin isn't kissing the Pope's ring.

they should convince their employees that their objection to BC is correct through rational discussion and argument. Then their employees will not use BC and they will, in effect, not be providing it. This seems to me a much better course than attempting to unilaterally force their employees to follow Catholic teaching.

10. This law does not force using birth control on anyone.

It just insures that medical insurance will cover the cost.

Since there are a variety of methods, a woman needs to seek medical help to make a more informed choice and the best choice for her body. If an individual doesn't believe in birth control methods or abortion - that is their prerogative; Nobody is going to force them personally to have their own abortion/take birth control…nor will anyone judge them over *NOT* taking it. THEIR life is not "ruined" because they've already exercised their freedom of choice by saying "No thank you". However, to deny availability to customers who ARE okay with birth control, abortions etc and want it available…well, that isn't fair to THEIR beliefs…nor is it fair to judge someone choosing to use these practices.

An employer is an employer is an employer, just like a land owner is a land owner is a land owner. I'm really sick and tired of big, corporate churches getting away with not having to adhere to rules the rest of us have to follow. I'll give them the whole not paying property taxes thing, but, when we're talking about how employees are treated? Don't churches have to follow all the rules regarding unemployment comp? Don't they have to follow OSHA rules? Why on earth would they be exempted from following ALL laws that ALL employers have to follow? It's logical that they follow all the rules that ALL employers have to follow.

Birth control is a medication. It is prescribed for many reasons. Yes, also to prevent pregnancy, which will cost the insurance company more money, if a pregnancy occurs.
