29. True, but without the police, she'd have a tough time taking him down herself

There's plenty of heroism out there, and plenty to go around.

I can't even imagine what it must have been like in the earlier stand-off, how many cops in Boston put their lives on the line?

69. The perp was obviously bleeding badly

since she could see the blood on the boat from the house.
She could have called the local police station and the usual response
time of 15 minutes by 2 cops could be sufficient to overpower a wounded
perpetrator.

My point is the thousand cops in Watertown did not find the perp, it was an ordinary citizen's tip. I watch reality cop shows regularly, and overwhelming number'of crimes are solved by tips, not directly by cops finding the culprit.

2/3rds of murders never get solved if I recall the statistics correctly.

That said, I still have lot of respect for the cops for protecting the citizens.
They indeed face being shot every time they step out on the streets.

28. Was it really necessary to lock down an entire American city?

In order to catch one 19 year old kid hiding under a tarp over a boat in some guy's back yard? How many people lost a couple of days pay? How many street vendors lost hundreds of dollars in income? How much did Boston Transit, or whatever it's called, lose? How many small businesses took a major hit? How many single mothers lost money for rent or food because the schools were closed and they had to stay home with their kids? Or single fathers? Or poor people in general?

Just how much damage could this 19 year old immigrant have really done? THINK about it.

I do not like this police state response. In time, I don't think many Bostonians will, either.

32. How many people didn't die?

...considering the arsenal those guys had put together, one way or another the police seem to have done a great job of minimizing loss and wrapping it up quickly. A worst case would have been not catching or ID'ing them quickly. Played out over weeks like the beltway shooters it would have been one long nightmare for everyone the city.

34. I don't know what weapons the 19 year old had at his disposal...

...and neither do you. What damage could he have possibly have done? Another two lives? Three? None?

Was it really worth shutting down Boston? These are police state tactics to the max, man. Or whatever you are. I don't think it's worth it. Think of the precedent that's been set. All you have to do is set off a bomb or shoot a couple of people and the ENTIRE CITY is shut down for days? No public transportation. No school. No commerce. Until The Evildoers are Caught.

This is not intelligent thinking going on, here.

As has been posted over and over, this was not a police state response. It was a request by the police department which was agreed to by the majority of the population.

And how much damage could the 19 year old immigrant have done? You mean with his brother with the explosives strapped to his body or without? You mean before he shot the security officer and the transit officer or after? You mean with the explosives that were found in his home or without them?

You think about it.

42. Yes, it was.

How much damage could he have done? Are you kidding me?

This a**hole and his brother were running around hurling IEDs out of a jacked car and had already killed one cop last night and wounded another, not to mention that little bombing thing on Monday. He wasn't going to stop all on his own.

This was handled in an incredibly efficient manner. And personally, I think the vast majority of Bostonians will stand up and applaud the professionalism and quick reactions of all of the cops, first responders, and everyone else who came together to stand up to these f*ckers.

I know I will.

"Just how much damage could this 19 year old immigrant have really done?"

Probably a lot more if the city had just gone about its business as usual, giving the guy plenty of potential cover for a getaway, and/or access to more victims.
