Mauldin officer resigns amid allegations of inappropriate texts

MAULDIN, SC (FOX Carolina) -
A Mauldin police officer resigned last month after allegations were made that he sent inappropriate text messages to a female student, according to officials.

Detective Ben Ford, spokesman for the Mauldin Police Department, said the officer resigned on Feb. 6 after the parent of a student at Mauldin High School told the principal about the text messages.

Ford said the principal contacted the police department, which launched an internal investigation. He said the officer resigned during the investigation.

The case was referred to prosecutors, who will determine if any charges should be filed.

FOX Carolina has opted not to identify the officer since the person is not charged with a crime.
