Every time Republican presidential candidates demonstrated one shred of compassion, they sunk in the polls. The end for Rick Perry came when he defended the Texas DREAM Act. Some say that Gingrich was hurt by his defense of immigrant grandmothers and his attacks on Bain Capital. Now, Jin DeMint is upset with Romney? They should be eating it up.

(39,370 posts)Romney's actually signalling that he has no intention of messing with the safety net (he'll even repair/make it better). In one fell swoop he called into question not just his electability but exactly how much of an ideological sellout he would be as President.
This is what a confused, insincere candidate is capable of.

(1,817 posts)Maybe they were even more upset about the rest of his statement: Not only did he say he wasn't concerned about the very poor because they had a safety net, he ended by saying that if the safety net had holes and it needed fixing he would fix it!
And I thought the GOP were running on the "less government, less entitlement" platform!
So. . .it's a double whammy for them!
