$40,000 check given to women mistakenly shot at in Dorner manhunt

A $40,000 check for a new vehicle was delivered Monday to an attorney representing the women whose truck was riddled with bullets by LAPD officers during last month's manhunt for fugitive ex-cop Christopher Dorner, city officials said.

City Atty. Carmen Trutanich said in a statement the tax-free payment would cover the cost of the pickup and other property. The deal was announced Thursday — several weeks after the women were promised a new truck, and two days after they publicly complained through Jonas that they had not received a new vehicle.

"I am thankful that this matter could be resolved in a quick and efficient manner," Trutanich said in a statement Monday. “The settlement negotiated by my office for the damage done to the truck was the legal and morally right thing to do both for the individuals involved and the taxpayers of this city."

1. Is that California state tax-free? I can't see how it'd be federally tax free

or how California can make that so, unless of course, the state pays the federal taxes for her.

3. It'd be taxable if it was a gift, but this is compensation for a loss.

The women's truck was severely damaged by LA police officers - they broke it, they bought it.

I think the women would be able to declare the loss of the truck on their tax returns, and thus be exempt from paying tax on that check.

Though someone who knows more about tax law may correct me on this if I'm wrong.

not sure how this is counted. but they gave enough that they can use that check to pay the tax and still get a new truck.

The fuckers shot her and shot her car up to pieces and all they're going to do is give her a new one? Fuck, I'd think that 10x that amount would start to make up for the LAPD's evilness and incompetence. The LAPD can go to hell.

If I were the lawyers for those women, I'd be looking to own the LAPD.

..that truck and on a number of grim fronts, it might have worked out "better" for those fuckers if they had. But through some miracle those two women survived the shooting squad and not only are their medical bills going to be enormous but the ABSOLUTELY UNPROVOKED ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT is going to cost the LAPD dearly.

Assuming you know details of how the shooting went down, can you even imagine what a jury will award victims of an action like that?

But so many times it seems that cops are above the law, especially the LAPD. It wasn't too long ago that they got away with beating the ever-loving crap out of a man who wasn't resisting, so I wouldn't be totally shocked if they got another slap on the wrist. I'm hoping like hell the award is huge, though. And that it shines a bright spotlight on the scourge that is the LAPD.
