Egypt Islamists stop protesters on way to parliament

Hundreds of Egyptian protesters demanding the end of military rule were prevented on Tuesday from reaching parliament by backers of the Muslim Brotherhood, which holds the majority in the assembly.

Activists had called for a march from Cairo's Tahrir Square -- the epicentre of the uprising that toppled veteran president Hosni Mubarak last year-- to parliament.

They want to press the newly-elected People's Assembly to implement the goals of the revolution, including an end to military trials of civilians, the restructuring of the interior ministry and a guarantee of freedoms and social justice.

But as the protesters moved from Tahrir towards the nearby parliament, they were confronted by a human shield of Muslim Brotherhood members who were blocking the street.

reminds me of the morons in Algeria who voted for the Islamic Salvation Front, who's major election plank was to get rid of elections.

The word "Islamist" is a derogatory name derived from hate radio. Limbaugh used it, along with Beck, Hannity and others to denote a wide range of Muslims, all of whom they considered to be terrorists. Now it has hit the mainstream, and devout Muslims find that this term is sweeping them into the same category as terrorists.

Please, be accurate with your language. The term Islamic terrorist, or Islamic fundamentalist, or many others are much more precise, and doesn't demonize whole groups of innocent people.

I would not change a news site's headline.

"Islamist" means only those adhereing to the Muslim religion. Turkey's government is termed "islamist" (as opposed to "secular&quot since the AKP came to power. But it is neither fundamentalist nor terrorist.

Convenient to hide your hate behind.

Oh, and we're not in Turkey friend, we're in the US, where the term has an entirely different meaning. Nice to see that you're willing to line up with Limbaugh and that ilk in using and abusing it.

Buy a clue, Islamist is a derogatory term. It doesn't mean "only those adhereing to the Muslim religion." That is what the terms Islamic and Muslim are for. Islamist is specifically aimed at categorizing a broad swath of Muslims as terrorists(notice the same -ist suffix? It is deliberate).

This term originated and was popularized by hate radio here in the US, surely you can do better than parrot them. Or maybe not.

Tell you what, if you think that Islamist is a suitable term to bandy about in public, go down to your local mosque and call one of the people exiting evening prayer an Islamist. Then you can reconsider your use of the term from the comfort of your hospital bed.

Use the term with the first person coming out, and then get to me from the hospital.

The N word was regularly used in the MSM back in the day as well. That doesn't make it right, then or now.

is that the activists in Tahrir and Maspero today and last week, are liberal and secular for the most part, opposing the Muslim Brotherhood and their ties with the military (SCAF). They believe the reason the MB won so many seats is because of a complicit media, which is why they are protesting the state media (which did not show Egyptian public the images of the blue bra girl being stomped, for example). It's a very interesting situation, and progressive for the time and place.
