What should concern people is not that paul is presenting issues that should concern progressive Democrats, and yet, most of them are NOT bring it up in Congress

"Rand Paul is against war with Iran"

...is against a lot of things, primarily civil rights: http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022472176

Are you on a mission to elevate Rand Paul to Ron Paul's fraudulent status as anti-war?

is "for." Rand Paul is for many things, most of which are in direct opposition to everything liberals, progressives, and even moderate Democrats want. The list is almost endless, and there should be no need to post that list here.

That he stood up to filibuster an Obama appointment on an issue that is really a non-issue, since nobody in the federal government is planning to start killing American citizens on US soil with drones, does not diminish what should be our complete disgust with this right wing libertarian asshole.

If anyone really needs a list, just click the link below and scroll down to the Positions section:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rand_Paul

If that is not enough, you can also visit this link:

http://www.thepoliticalguide.com/Profiles/Senate/Kentucky/Rand_Paul/Views/

After you visit those links and learn what Ron Paul really stands for, I'm sure you'll agree with the following statement:

Fuck Ron Paul, and his father, too.

Lots of Dems scared the party will lose supporters to libertarians is all I can figure. Shame they don't get ahead of this instead of sticking their fingers in their ears and blasting Rand Paul for doing what the Dem leadership should have done.

And because I agree with maybe two of Rand Pauls stances I'm not going to disavow being a Democrat and start identifying as a Libertarian. It's like when someones says they are comfortable in their sexualilty, if you are comfortable with being a Democrat you should have no problems or worries just being on a couple of the same pages as a REPUBLICAN like RP. What does it take to penetrate that type of ego?

This abusive lockstep thinking is what drove me away from DU in 2009, when those of us who just wanted to see the Dems and Obama fight for the public option were castigated for it. Simply wanting someone to fight, even if the votes weren't there, was wrong. I'm back now because of the chained CPI threat and it's the same thing: shut up until it's done, then complain. I'm not into the whole "my party, right or wrong" thing. That's what the cons do. I'm not seeing much daylight between the two anymore, in policy or tolerance of criticism...but we're not allowed to say that either. That's fine. I don't need this place...and the attitudes here, those representative of the administration's, have finally convinced me the national Democratic Party doesn't need me either.

Armchair activists to drone on about.

Meanwhile, us Democrats living in poverty are concerned about issues that matter to us.

I will start using this in my conversations. I have been absolutely astonished at the hate thrown at Rand Paul for standing up against Drone killings and their questionable legality. The democratic leadership has failed at taking the right position on this issue and I am glad somebody stepped up and is taking a stand.

of a few shared positions between extreme Libertarianism and mainstream Progressive belief?

There is nothing really surprising or wrong with this.

Some beliefs are so widespread in American culture that there is a statistical certainty of shared belief between opponents.

This is nothing new at all. There has always been overlap between libertarians and progressives, particularly in regards to civil liberties and foreign wars. This matters because these aren't minor issues on the left. They are major aspects of progressive identities.

I don't see why this has to be a big deal. So Rand opposes drones and foreign wars . . . well, we already knew that, didn't we? The agreement on these issues has always been there - the question seems to be whether or not it's appropriate to acknowledge this and/or work with libertarians moving forward.

Some say yes, some say no. My opinion is that politics is always about wheeling and dealing and you can't always choose your dance partner.

just because I am also against a war with Iran, doesn't mean for one second I'm on his side.

the Venn diagram of libertarians and Progressives overlap on the issue of war and not getting involved in them, beyond that, mr paul is a crazy as a shithouse rat.
