An Australian billionaire has released blueprints for the Titanic II, with plans to set sail across the Atlantic in 2016.
Real estate and coal magnate Clive Palmer announced his plans at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York on Tuesday. He said the replica will look and feel like the original Titanic. Some people may be uneasy about the idea, but Palmer said others are clearly fascinated by the Titanic's story.
"The area (for) passengers will be authentic, with the same design and facilities. But there will be modern things such as air conditioning and other features we are debating - such as Internet on the ship," Palmer said at a press conference.
The ship will be built in China. Crew members' outfits will be inspired by the styles of 1912. There will be dishes from the original menu for passengers to enjoy, Palmer said.
The Titanic II will carry 2,600 passenger and 900 crew members. There will be enough lifeboat space for all of them.

The original Titanic didn't have them in each cabin. How can someone in the 21st Century be debating on the internet? And for your viewing pleasure, we have James Cameron's The Titanic on the big screen tonight.

(8,636 posts)The original Titanic was a prime example of Gilded Age opulence, that is, the last Gilded Age. This new Titannic will of course be an example of the New Gilded age, expensive cruises and luxury for the Plutonomy set while the masses scramble for a declining number of low-paying jobs.

(275 posts)You can bet there will probably be many, many lifeboats, and who knows how many different new and modern safety features.

(4,788 posts)I have a cookbook with recipes from the Titanic. It's called Last Meal, IIRC. It has the menus and recipes for the meals served in all 3 classes on the Titanic the day it sank. One recipe in particular from the 2nd class dinner service is very nice if you like asparagus. It's chilled asparagus in a champagne vinaigrette with saffron.
