Balancing our governments books is not what matters most (Its) a nice goal, but that shouldnt be our primary objective, Jindal told a packed ballroom at the Renaissance Grand in downtown St. Louis for the Missouri Republican Partys Lincoln Days.
We must not become the party of austerity. We must become the party of (economic) growth, Jindal said. We have fallen into a trap of believing the world revolves around Washington. [...]
As conservatives, we are falling into these sideshow traps instead of hammering at the message of economic growth, said Jindal. We seem to have an obsession with government bookkeeping.
We cant be the stupid party, and we cant be the party of austerity? What does that leave for Republicans?

(19,357 posts)I live in Louisiana and as a professor I know what he has done to higher education in the state. Since he's been in office he has lowered education funding for state colleges and universities by 32%. He claims he has helped higher education weather a state revenue loss of 26% in the past five years and has only cut state funding by 7%.
He bases his figure of 7% (instead of 32% which all but a funded right-wing study concluded) on the fact that universities have raised tuition (which he calls state funding!) and several other ficsal slight-of-hand.
Do not believe this man for a moment.
Jindal wants to do away with the corporate and individual income taxes and replace their revenue with higher sales taxes, which he claims will e for fair for everyone (and make the tax cheats pay an equal share). He claims a sales tax will not inordinately hurt the poor nor aid the rich.
Do not believe this man for a moment.

(2,529 posts)If he's hoping to appeal to moderates in a future general election, he's forgetting he has to run the gauntlet in his party's mad dog primaries. And the current Republican Party eats their own.

Here's the answer: They can always fall back on bigotry, misogyny, and violence as their back-up themes.
