"Freedom Red"?

I usually listen to NPR while I'm going thru the internets.

WBUR is having one of their fundraisers and they are pushing "Freedom Red" roses.

That sure sounds like shades of Freedom Fries.

Your basic classic red rose. A google search turned up pages and pages of florists using that name (and not to be confused with "Spirit of Freedom Rose" which is a pink one).

None of these places mention the derivation of the name (and I'm only going to invest so much time on a search of something I'm only mildly curious about), but I get the impression the name has a longer legacy than the jingo rename of pommes frites.
