(86,502 posts)when she hit it, chances are the actual position of the bird's body might have miraculously saved it by slipping into the space in the grill.
I had a bunch of those around my yard in a place I lived in several years ago, beat up my cat twice... and the cat still got away both times. They used to catch pigeons and crows and trim them out while perching in the tree outside my front porch. Many mornings I would step outside and find clipped off wings and tails of crows and pigeons lying about at the base of the tree... eewwwe!
They are beautiful though.

(42,146 posts)I sometimes find that.

(86,502 posts)didn't know falcons would do that too but it makes sense. Where I'm at now I will occasionally find the remains of bald eagles who have become the prey of owls, kind of creepy to find those - when I'm out hiking in the woods.
I knew that what I had leaving it's discarded parts of prey in my yard though, it's nest was about forty feet from the "trimming tree" in my yard and I was privy to the November mating dance every year. Some nights there would be up to a dozen owls "hooing" from the tall trees encircling my yard, the nest was in the big Blue Spruce. They all have a different timbre so you can pick out individual voices and count how many there are. It was very educational as I had never seen Great Horned Owls in my life prior to that. I didn't care for the part where the nest resident saw my cat as food though.

(86,502 posts)Thanks for that ref. I had no Idea that Yeehaw was Seminole for wolf... lends some respectability to the term. I always thought "yeehaw" and heehaw" were somewhat derogatory given the slang it turned into in modern times. My nephew, when he was two and three used to call anybody with a cowboy hat a "heehaw" because his grandfather used to watch the TV show with that name so he made that connection... and I just thought it was funny.
Very interesting. Of course, Jackass Junction was named such because that's the clientele of the historic brothel there used for transportation to the place. Place names can boggle the mind sometimes.

Owls are beautiful, wondrous animals. I'm glad the guy made it out ok.

(8,377 posts)To keep other nuisance birds away, you can get an ornament that just has the two simulated owl eyes and nothing else. That is just as effective as having a mock-up of the entire bird.
The birds are majestic perched or in flight. But their bodies aren't as big as they look. The wings and features are very deceptive. I can easily see how the bird fit through the cracks of the grille. I assume it could have been injured or else would have gotten out when the car was stopped. But it seemed to be moving well when rescued. I'm sure it will be nursed back and released into the wild.

(30,247 posts)There he was in Central Florida minding his beeswax, flying around looking for some vittles to feed his family when BAM!!! He gets hit by a big machine and ends up inside its grill. A day later he is still stuck in it and finds himself in South Florida. Nothing wrong with Plantation, but how is he going to get back home? The wife is never going to believe his story. The least the lady could do is give him a ride back when she's done visiting her son.

(20,886 posts)I call them kamikaze birds because they dive in front of cars all the time. This one dove. I looked in the mirror expecting to see squashed woodpecker on the road. All I saw was a feather drifting to the asphalt. I thought, "Oh shit, smashed woodpecker on my grill." When I got home and checked the grill, I found this little bird alive and clinging frantically to my grill. I pried him off and let him recover and fly away. I'm sure he had tales to tell when he reached home.

(7,142 posts)to kill an owl. The lady was lucky; and so was the owl.

(13,227 posts)Driving home late on the freeway, this massive bird is jumping around on the roadway after getting clipped (after likely swooping down on a snack). Had to swerve really hard, and I'm thankful there wasn't a car in the other lane. This was a massive bird, with a wingspan almost the width of my car. Luckily I didn't soil my pants.
