Dorner hunt: Hour after Portland man lands in San Diego, surrounded by cops with guns drawn

Man Mistaken for Manhunt Suspect
In the midst of a state-wide manhunt for the suspect in multiple shootings, a man mistaken for the suspect was surrounded by police and handcuffed briefly.

--snip--

Police located the man and told him to drop his cell phone and put his hands in the air. Police put him in handcuffs as he told them he had just landed in San Diego less than an hour ago. They later learned that the man was Portland resident Greg Pruitt, not Dorner.

In a brief press conference following the incident, an SDPD spokesperson said Pruitt was just "in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Pruitt said he was sitting in his car in the hotel parking lot when he noticed a police officer out of the corner of his eye with a gun, but didn’t think anything of it. “All of a sudden I turn around and look back and see another [officer] behind a tree with a machine gun and thought, ‘this is not good,’” he said.

When he realized the officers were aiming their weapons at him, he dropped his cell phone and held his hands above his head. Police handcuffed him and looked at the contents in his wallet before releasing him.

“I didn’t even want to breath,” he told NBC 7 after the incident. “You have guns pointed at you, you don’t move, you don’t breath you don’t blink you don’t ask why, you just do what you’re told.”

Portlandia meets Fortlandia! Very glad the police decided to make sure they had the right guy before opening fire.

CNN reported another incident in which LAPD officers stopped a vehicle resembling Dorner's with guns "nearly" or "half-way" drawn at one of the crime scenes where Dorner had shot cops. The driver was checked out and released.

Sorry, there's just no excuse for these lapses. When I was in college (majoring in Social Work) we had a guest speaker who said there was nobody more dangerous than a scared person with a gun...and police are often the scared people with guns.

in a truck that looked like Dorners.......so they fired on it and injured innocent citizens. Are LAPD that afraid and out of control that they will now just shoot first and ask questions later? In the wrong place at the wrong time, what a circus it is out here.

their "suspect". He'll never have a chance to surrender. They WILL gun him down on sight. I am thinking that "manifesto" is full of a lot of very uncomfortable truths.

Those 2 elderly Asian women should sue LAPD for everything it's worth.

Thankfully they did. So, now that Dorners words are now the words of a murderer, many people will simply dismiss them as the words of a madman, lunatic, maniac and so forth. I agree, he will never have a chance to surrender, he will force a confrontation with LE or he will take his own life. From his own words, "he is already dead."

Putting aside the "rantings of a murdering lunatic", I can't help but draw on my own personal knowledge not only about the inner workings of the LAPD, but of the inner workings of the NYPD as well, that there are many forms of corruption existing in both of those agencies. And now that Dorner is a known murderer, I'm supposed to simply dismiss what he says as the ravings of a murdering lunatic, when I know better based on personal knowledge. Uncomfortable truths indeed, and if fully investigated, I'm sure some uncomfortable facts as well. Dorner will not make happen with this murder spree, what he thought would happen........investigations, a reformed LAPD and the clearing of his name.....how do you clear the name of a murderer of innocent people because they claim it is for the greater good? It's all so sick and surreal.....my thoughts go out to all those families of the dead and injured.

Thank goodness the LA PD didn't have to actually apologize for ANOTHER shooting of a mistaken identity.

One err averted in this tragedy of errors.
