Texas prosecutor shot multiple times in broad daylight

Texas prosecutor shot multiple times in broad daylight

An assistant district attorney for Kaufman County, Texas, just east of Dallas, was shot multiple times in broad daylight on Thursday morning just before 9 a.m. as he walked from his vehicle into the courthouse.

Police told NBC DFW they are searching for two suspects in a silver Ford Taurus, but they do not know who may have wanted to kill Kaufman County Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse, who was connected to many drug and felony cases.

Police immediately locked down the courthouse and began a search for the perpetrators, “but we don’t have solid information on there being two,” a police spokesperson told reporters. “Preliminary information was that they might have been wearing some sort of [body armor] jacket of sorts.”

A local defense attorney and friend to the victim reportedly said that Hasse had recently prosecuted cases involving gangs and white supremacists, indicating the killing may be retaliation.

Please report that info to their police.

Oh? You don't have it? You were running off half-cocked?

It may have been white supremacists, or Mexican cartels, or gangs.

The Rangers will be investigating this.

The Aryan Brotherhood is a current media favorite only because the DoJ posted just before the shooting on its website crediting the Kaufman County District Attorney's Office with helping investigate two known members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas.

Texas Prosecutor Mark Hasse Killed After Reportedly Investigating Aryan Brotherhood

Texas authorities announced they’ve made an arrest after a shooting Thursday morning left one prosecutor dead and a town looking for answers. Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse was walking from his car into the Kaufman County Courthouse when he was approached by two men and gunned down in front of witnesses, police said.
Hasse, 57, had reportedly been involved in the prosecution of the Aryan Brotherhood, a notorious gang of white supremacists. At a press conference Thursday afternoon investigators said Hasse had been assaulted and “shot multiple times,” although they suspected the attack was also symbolic in nature.

“When you hear a DA at 8:40 in the morning is gunned down by two people, I think there’s a reasonable presumption it’s not random,” lawyer James Lee Bright told the Dallas Morning News. “Within two or three minutes, the whole square was literally flooded with officers. I just went inside, and by the time I got inside the information it was actually a shooting and who it might be was just barely starting to filter into the courthouse.”

Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins would not elaborate on the details of the arrest, only telling reporters one had been made. The shooting came just hours before two members of the Aryan Brotherhood pleaded guilty to a slew of charges in a Houston courtroom. Hasse had been involved in their prosecution and friends say he would not have been a difficult man to find.

I am reminding you that more than one group is under suspicion. You are knee-jerk focusing on one of several possible groups. Here is what DA Mike McLellan has to say, "...as far he knew Hasse was not currently working an Aryan Brotherhood case and that it was too early to narrow the focus."

http://www.dallasnews.com/news/crime/headlines/20130131-investigators-search-for-killers-of-kaufman-county-prosecutor.ece

Authorities acknowledged they are investigating the possibility of a link between the slaying and the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang, which the Kaufman County district attorney’s office, including Hasse, has been actively involved in prosecuting.

But they quickly added that to their knowledge, Hasse was not currently handling any cases involving the violent organization. They said labeling the organization as the focus of their investigation would be premature.

And despite the slaying bearing the earmarks of a “hit,” authorities stopped short of labeling the killing as that.

“We’re pursuing all possible cases that he’s been working, but we can’t be confident that’s where it came from,” Kaufman Police Chief Chris Aulbaugh said. “We can’t say it was a hit. We’re pursuing all possibilities.”
