County prosecutor shot outside courthouse in downtown Kaufman, Texas
A Kaufman County prosecutor has reportedly been shot near the courthouse in downtown Kaufman this morning.
The condition of the prosecutor was not known. His name is being withheld, pending notification of his family.
The shooting reportedly occurred in a parking lot behind a county building where many prosecutors and judges park. The courthouse is just a short distance away, said Eric Smenner, a Kaufman defense attorney.
“My secretary heard the gunshots,” Smenner said.

WFAA-TV (Channel 8) reports that the prosecutor has died, citing an email the Dallas County DA’s office has sent to attorneys and staff.
The DA’s office in Kaufman County also confirmed the death, according to various reports. The victim’s name has not yet been released, pending notification of his family.
According to state records, the prosecutor was certified as a peace officer in 1988. The district attorney’s office was currently carrying his commission, records show.
Those that know him say the prosecutor was a gun enthusiast who typically wore a gun belt. It is unknown if he was wearing the gun belt Thursday, but he almost always carried a weapon, they say.
