An environmentalists proposal to eradicate New Zealands pet cat population drew howls and hisses of protest from cat-lovers in that country, which boasts the highest percentage of cat owners in the world. According to the Toronto Star, Gareth Morgan wants New Zealanders to give up their cats in order to save the island nations endangered exotic birds, but cat owners have given the plan a big paws-down.
Morgans website, Cats to Go, features a photo of a tiny kitten sporting red devil horns, and announces, That little ball of fluff you own is a natural born killer.
In a country with the highest percentage of households with at least one cat (48 percent), the very notion has set fur flying.
I say to Gareth Morgan, butt out of our lives, said Bob Kerridge, president of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, in a television appearance. Dont deprive us of the beautiful companionship that a cat can provide individually and as a family.

(24,759 posts)The last time there was a feline genocide, rats and mice, replete with the fleas that caused the Black Death, proliferated to the point where 1/3 of the European population perished.
Does this guy have a death wish, or is he a Kiwi version of a teahadist who thinks he can't die from the plague?

Cats have contributed to the extinction of 9 native bird species
One feral cat killed 102 endangered native short tail bats in a week
Cats kill native birds. In our cities domestic cats kill native birds faster than they can possibly breed
Around 40% of New Zealands native land-birds are already extinct, and of the ones remaining 37% are endangered.
