He'll have the band play Soul Man instead of Hail to the Chief.
But you get the idea. What are YOU hoping Obama does to make white rural Americans' head's explode?

(34,589 posts)When rural Americans see that traditional Democratic policies improve the economy mightily, their heads will explode. Then they'll vote Democratic for the next 40 years. Like what happened with FDR.

(2,500 posts)The repubs have tried to derail any signs of recovery, but the economic indicators show unemployment numbers dropping and more consumer confidence than since the Bush Financial Crash.
I just have a good feeling heading into the 2nd term. I sense a strong year for the USA and the world.

(Hey Pretzel_Warrior, put away that big brush...)

(8,361 posts)Obviously, when I said white rural Americans it was political shorthand for the LARGEST demographic group who voted against Obama both times.
I really don't get it at DU these days.

The best part for me though will be when he declares all firearms illegal for normal citizens, declares everyone in the world a US citizen, and makes Spanish our official language.

(20,600 posts)I don't think about stuff like that - hoping he pisses off rural folk.
As for the inaguration, it will be just another day as far as I'm concerned. Not into the pomp and ceremony crap.

Oh, yeah, I'm also looking forward to seeing his ride all pimped out and a few shots of him in a dashiki drinking a Colt 45 while running a pick through his new afro. Oh wait, that's me!

That was in his first term, but I don't think I should be looking for something to top that.

(54,349 posts)This was the third time I had met him, and the White House had asked me to send them a brief bio before this last meet-up. So he knew full well who I was before he got there. When my daughter was in school in the States, she interned at Emily's List in DC, and she saw him quite a lot, although she had no clue he'd be president 3 years later.

(46,179 posts)1. He will fire Arne Duncan, appoint an actual educator, and repeal all legislation or program/policies that require high stakes testing. He will make sure that there will be no more high-stakes testing driving education deform, he will withdraw his support for all privatization, and he will work tirelessly to heal and fund a healthy, vibrant, PUBLIC education system by putting educators in charge.
2. He will become a champion of universal, single-payer, NOT FOR PROFIT health CARE.
3. He will make domestic infrastructure the focus of everything he does, and the beneficiary of the bulk of whatever $$ we have to invest.
4. He will also focus on closing economic gaps, rebuilding the middle class, and fully supporting many-layered support and safety nets for those who are not in the middle class.
5. He will fight for election reform: 100% publicly financed elections with IRV.
6. He will repeal NAFTA, and return the U.S. to fair trade based on strong, high labor and environmental standards.
I don't want him to make white rural Americans' head's explode.
I'm white. I'm rural. I'm an American. I like my head to stay on my shoulders.
His right-of-center corporate policies have been setting off little explosions for the last 4 years. I want him to HEAL that damage, not extend it.

(5,714 posts)But better for him to have a "D" next to his name than an "R" because....
Then again, if there were an "R" next to his name, we might see some vigorous opposition to bad policy from Ds in Congress.

(8,361 posts)Society is incremental--not revolutionary
LWolf
(46,179 posts)More accurately, SOME people know that. I do.
In order to move forward, to make "incremental" progress, the goals have to actually be on the table. That's how Republicans have been able to pick away until things that would have been unheard of a decade or two ago are suddenly "normal." They always bring everything, even the bat-shit crazy stuff, to the table.
When you don't allow single-payer on the table when crafting the "affordable care act," when you don't allow anything on the education table but corporate privatizing reforms, then your "compromises" are simply efforts, not to move forward, but to give up less, and you don't see any "incremental" progress.
