Let us pray for the lives of these Americans and the many other people kidnapped by Islamists, in reaction to the invasion of Mali by the French, aided by the USA.
Same goes for the French, who apparently have not learned their lessons from Vietnam and Algeria.

It means someone can read the subject line and not have to click the link for the post, because there is no text in it.
Kinda makes sense.

(101,265 posts)"it's OK, the USA has done nothing wrong in Mali this time, you Americans can go free?". Be honest.
Welcome_hubby
(312 posts)If there is no US support for the even that triggered this retaliative act, that scenario is possible.
By the way, you are going to say I'm not honest on the grounds that I disagree with you, but I'm not concerned.
muriel_volestrangler
(101,265 posts)You're oh-so concerned that Obama has done something which others can use to blame anything that happens on him. But OKNancy points out there are Japanese hostages too.
He called Algeria's attitude "a betrayal for the blood of Algerian martyrs slain by the French colonists."
The kidnapping was claimed by a group recently formed by Mokthar Belmokhtar, a notorious one-eyed jihadist nicknamed "the uncatchable", who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia on several occasions in his home country Algeria.
He is one of the founding members of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), which later became known as Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), but left the group at the end of 2012.
Belmokhtar is also one of the most prolific kidnappers of foreigners for ransom in the Sahel.
They're not saying they've sorted the victims by nationality, depending on their involvement in Mali at the moment. Al Qaeda is not exactly friendly to the USA; you cannot seriously say they'd let Americans go, right now. And there's still a chance they'll just demand a ransom anyway.

(9,854 posts)I know this is a terribly serious subject, but the phrase "Mokthar Belmokhtar, a notorious one-eyed jihadist nicknamed "the uncatchable"" struck me as oddly funny.

(99 posts)The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (officially, the Southeast Asia Resolution, Public Law 88-408) was a joint resolution that the United States Congress passed on August 7, 1964, in response to the Gulf of Tonkin Incident.
It is of historical significance because it gave U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson authorization, without a formal declaration of war by Congress, for the use of "conventional'' military force in Southeast Asia. Specifically, the resolution authorized the President to do whatever necessary in order to assist "any member or protocol state of the Southeast Asia Collective Defense Treaty". This included involving armed forces.

(26,060 posts)That troll stench is getting unbearable today. Where are the moderators?
muriel_volestrangler
(101,265 posts)By calling this 'the old playbook', and referring to the Gulf of Tonkin (which didn't involve Islamists), this poster is clearly saying that this is a 'false flag' operation, by Obama, to be used as an excuse to invade North Africa. This is a troll; please hide - ToS box is checked for MIRT to deal with them.
JURY RESULTS
A randomly-selected Jury of DU members completed their review of this alert at Wed Jan 16, 2013, 11:18 AM, and voted 1-5 to LEAVE IT ALONE.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Post is factually true. What's the problem?
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Boy, the alerter sure read (inferred) much more into this post than I did. And unless the alerter (or someone else) has more evidence than simply a low post count that the poster is a troll, I'm not just going to assume this. I once had a low post count, too, as did we all at one point. And for someone who's been at DU for nearly 10 years, I might still be deemed as a low-count poster. Now, I might think this whole thread is kinda silly (just another "blame Obama" thread), but this individual post, to me, doesn't seem to rise to the level of outrageousness that merits hiding.
Juror #5 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
I don't know how I could have worded the alert more clearly. What else can "the old playbook" be, apart from an accusation that the US has engineered this to have an excuse to escalate, as Tonkin is held to be? Neither France or Islamists were involved in Tonkin, but this thread has tried to make it about the USA.

(9,748 posts)The jury let that stand by 4-2 vote. While my reply calling the poster of that RW meme a "fucking moron" was hidden by a 6-0 vote.
Something has gone wrong at DU.

(69,014 posts)I would have hidden it, too.
Instead say, "THAT IS A FUCKING MORONIC STATEMENT. I can't believe an intelligent DU member such as yourself would have said that."

(99 posts)President Obama is pulling our troops out of two war zones. He's talking about the savings of billions of dollars in our defence budget. The savings will come from not buying tanks from general dynamics, fighters from lockheed matin and attack helicopters from boeing. Look at all of the wars over the last 60 years. I find it funny that this war in Mali hits the front page of every paper just when we hear our kids are coming home. My post was about the military industrial complex that President Eisenhower talked about in his farewell address. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militaryindustrial_complex
We have troops and ships all over the world. War is big business and business has been good for the last 50 years. We as a nation have nothing to do with Mali, but throw in American hostages and al Qaeda and we have new hot spot to send troops.
Again. I'm not saying that President Obama is trying to get us into ground war in Mali. I just don't like the way this thing went down just when we see things coming to a end in that part of the world.
muriel_volestrangler
(101,265 posts)You're accusing someone of mounting a false flag operation. You posted it in a thread that tried to pin the hostages on Obama. Not one of the news threads about Mali. You didn't mention the military-industrial complex at all; you mentioned Congress and the President. Trying to retroactively insert the MIC, now you realise you've been noticed, won't work.
"This thing went down" in Mali over the past year. ECOWAS was the main proposed outside involvement, until France (under a socialist president) stepped in at the (non-democratic) Mali regime's request. The US involvement is minimal. But to you, this is the Gulf of Tonkin 'playbook'. Yeah, you're here to drum up an atmosphere of blame for Obama.

Forum Hosts ARE NOT ALLOWED to lock for anything by SOP violations, AS PER THE ADMINS. Period. Group Hosts have much more latitude. We can lock for anything, and block posters from the group for whatever reason we want.

(9,854 posts)We need somebody with some critical thinking skills who can say, "Gee, realistically this person is a troll or a CT freak and needs to be shut down even though they have not egregiously violated the TOS." and then lock the threads and chunk the freaks out. Cause, really, this place has been a freak show since the election.

Algeria Gas Field Attacked By Islamists Militants, 7 Americans Reportedly Among 41 Foreigners Held Hostage
The raiders were also reported to have killed three people, including a Briton and a French national.
Why aren't you saying "shame on David Cameron" whose citizen was actually killed? Or are only the Americans innocent?

Now days they dont even try to cover up this staged outrage ..SMH also I will assume OBAMA was added to the title to garner a response well played.
