He is one of the founding members of the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), which later became known as Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), but left the group at the end of 2012.

Belmokhtar is also one of the most prolific kidnappers of foreigners for ransom in the Sahel.

They're not saying they've sorted the victims by nationality, depending on their involvement in Mali at the moment. Al Qaeda is not exactly friendly to the USA; you cannot seriously say they'd let Americans go, right now. And there's still a chance they'll just demand a ransom anyway.

President Obama is pulling our troops out of two war zones. He's talking about the savings of billions of dollars in our defence budget. The savings will come from not buying tanks from general dynamics, fighters from lockheed matin and attack helicopters from boeing. Look at all of the wars over the last 60 years.
