(3,521 posts)My mother was a teacher, 2 of my sisters are teachers, my brother and I were both teachers at one time. Most of the teachers I had in school were great people. But that being said, and I'm not sure anyone has mentioned this in this debate, I had a few teachers who should not have been trusted with sharp scissors. Not every teacher is as stable as they might be. Bad day? Frustrated? Kids pushing her/him over the edge?. Another tragedy. That is my fear and prediction if teachers are armed in schools.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,362 posts)The photo appeared on my Facebook feed, put up by an old friend who I know to be rather liberal in many ways. I was a bit taken aback when I saw she had put this up, basically agreeing with the sentiment.
I wonder if the people who actually think this is a good idea understand the reality of what you posted. Not everyone - BY FAR - is prepared, much less capable of handling a firearm in a panic situation. Assuming the hundreds of thousands of teachers in this country could even be properly trained, how many of them would even want to, much less be capable of handling such responsibility.
It is the equivalent of seeing a house on fire and thinking the best way to help the situation is to pile dry sticks and branches against the house.

(10,712 posts)Security guards have to complete some lengthy firearms training in most states before they're licensed to carry. Many security firms have their own facilities for training, and have regular gun safety and recertification regimens, and their own firing ranges. Many of them also find that controlling weapons is vital to controlling liability and preventing accidents; firearms are often issued at clock-in, and returned (with rounds accounted for) at clock-out. I would imagine, in practice, that the same thing would be needed if teachers were to be armed in schools.
I can't imagine a single school anywhere seriously considering that, but anything less would be just a different sort of dangerous mess.

(15,396 posts)If a teacher is to carry I recommend a OWB leather or kydex holster.
A female teacher friend of mine bought her a SD pistol yesterday. She feels her Lady smith was too heavy to conceal carry...
