Barney Frank jabs Newt Gingrich: A long-simmering feud
Posted by Rachel Weiner at 03:34 PM ET, 11/28/2011

....................

“I did not think I lived a good enough life to see Newt Gingrich as the Republican nominee,” the 30-year House veteran said. “He would be the best thing to happen to Democrats since Barry Goldwater ... It’s still unlikely, but I have hopes.”

...............
“I despise Gingrich because of the negative effect he has had on American politics.”

He elaborated to biographer Stuart Weisberg, saying Gingrich had helped destroy bipartisan cooperation in the House and was “the meanest and most destructive political figure I have ever seen.”

The fact that Gingrich was easily offended, “the thinnest-skinned character assassin I ever met,” Frank added, “just encouraged me to keep going after him.”

1. It's really hard to say at this point, but

I think Romney is trying very hard to be the best thing to happen to Democrats. People are starting to understand the nature of vulture capitalism, I wish I could say it is because we are educating them, but it seems that Newt has covered that for us.

7. the mistake the left has made the last 20 years is not recognizing newt is totally radio

all a GOP politician has to do to succeed is ride the limbaugh bandwagon.

it gets pounded into 100 mil earholes every week.

that's why the GOP is fried- they rode the limbaugh bandwagon off the cliff....

unfortunately, because the left has ignored that fact, we're all getting dragged over- we already have.

8. He is so right

We can trace the intransegence of the repub party to his time in the House and especially as Speaker.
One of the first things he did as Speaker is hand out a reading list so all members could be expected to think as he did. Those who didn't were pushed out of their committee positions. He always seems to think he has been elected God.

I still want to see the Republican't folks going on for a while, so that more folks comprehend how special they are.

Although you all know that while they are doing this the Democratic folks must get back power from the states for fair elections and make sure that the De Supreme Court doesn't pencil whip us like 2000. You all know that the republican'ts can not play fair!

13. I'm on the fence. Newt's more likely to lose. But he's so scorched earth.

Newt just feels toxic to me. We've seen how Romney has a glass jaw; I'm pretty sure Obama can take him. On the other hand, Gingrich does so much damage to public character, I think it'd be disastrous for the country to have him out as the standard bearer for a major party, whipping up hatred and planting seeds of resentment that would germinate for years. Maybe I want a Republican who will lose with a little bit of grace, like McCain. Or maybe I want to hope that Republicans will get burned out on all that futile hate mongering if they finally do nominate a master at the game like Gingrich.

Mostly, I wish Republicans would grow up and start putting the country first.

For instance, Nazis were supportive of labor union rights, opposed child labor, and supported free summer camps for the nation's youth.

Um... I think I lost my point somewhere in there

49. i also think of McCain and Bush, how McCain was seen as the tougher opponent, but one on one McCain

comes off weaker in things like debates and speeches. Romney is the same way.

the thing with Gingrich is he would come off tougher and nasty but i think there are some who will spin it as something good.

the way Bush's negatives were turned into being just like everyone else. after having BUsh for President the stupid isn't seen as positive anymore which is why Perry didn't do well.

but i can see Gingrich's nasty tough act as being considered something good.

indies are easily fooled.

"Barney's just a fag. Who cares what he thinks."

(presented in coded messages as well as flat out like the above)

This will not resinate as much as in the past, but...
As long as the GOP owns the airwaves, we're in trouble.

You'll notice the dismissive "long time simmering feud" meme... making it all sound personal and of no "real" importance. Like it's "They just don't like each other".

21. Great. Republicans just fell MORE in love with Newt!

Republicans want a junk-yard dog as their candidate. Not all Republicans, but the crazy faction
of the party that votes in high numbers does.

The base of the Republican party does not believe in Mitt, his policies nor his ability to beat Obama.
And frankly, when I look at Mitt--he comes across as some namby-pamby, warmed-over anchorman
who probably couldn't pour himself a cup of coffee without getting lost in confusion.

The base is reacting to Romney's perceived "moderate" stances, and also his wussy factor. They intuitively
understand that Romney is not the sharpest tool in the shed and that he just doesn't seem to have a spine.
He doesn't inspire them.

The Republican base wants a mean bastard who will blow Obama away in a debate. Remember how angered
we were at George Bush? When you're that angry--you want a candidate with a comparable degree of passion
and emotion. Newt has it. Mitt is a human dumpling.

All of these stories about how mean Newt is--will only make the Republican base jump into his arms even more.

36. Newt and moderate should not be used in the same sentence unless Romney is in the middle of it

Last edited Mon Jan 23, 2012, 01:44 PM - Edit history (1)

Newt can rally all of the Die Hard fundamentalist, and he can get them to vote for him. Newt also has Special Favor, he is Ordained as A representative of the Ku Klux Klan, the Nation's premier Racist Organization. Newty is also most likely (though I cannot confirm it) Poster Fuhrer of the Neo-Nazis. In short Newt has the full support of the Crazies and when Santorum drops out all Santorums support will probably go to Newt.

the Problem of being a Gingrinch is that he is so radical that he will alienate the moderates and force them to vote For President Obama.

Short and Sweet: Newt may win the GOP Nomination but he cannot win a Presidency.

Before I learned About Bain Capitol and before Colbert was thinking about running, Romney was my favorite out of the Republican candidates, his being moderate will alienate the Republican Base but can win the hearts of more Americans.

Short and Sweet: Romney may not have the capacity to win the GOP Nomination but he has a good chance of winning the presidency, as long as President Obama Doesn't Wield the Bain Capitol card as the Sword that Newt Gingrich did, cutting through the Dreams of the would be President, leaving a bleeding Carcass of GOP hopes To further Fester into the cancer that is Gingrich's Cackling I told you so.

41. They'll take a Pittbull over a Lab any day.

I agree.
The contemporary right wing voter, listens to Rush, watches FAUX News to prop up their "reality". So you can bet if the Grinch wins out, he'll be lauded 24/7 and defended against "liberal lies and rumours".

But more than that. The Koch brothers, Murdoch, and reps like McConnell and the like have used all of their influence to radicalize traditional Republican voters where NOTHING is more important than to defeat the socialist muslim gay-loving Kenyan in the next election. Republican voters, even when not under this kind of constant brainwashing, have proven time and time again that what is good for the others goose is not always good for their gander. Divorced a sick wife for a younger model?....no problem. Affairs with the second wife and desire for an "open" marriage?....so what. $300,000 ethics violation fines and losing his previous speakers job?....whatever.

IMO, Gingrich would be the toughest opponent to take on. Because he'd stoop lower than any other candidate. There is a kind of power you have when you have no shame to hold you back. And the new breed of bagger Repubs would lap it all up and anyone denouncing the predictable lies in his SuperPac ads, would be branded liberals and liars (the assimilation goes without saying to the flock)

I'd say be careful what you wish for Barney.
