FORT MYERS, Fla. Canadians are making a mass exodus from Southwest Florida, and now businesses on the Gulf Coast say they're feeling the impact.
This comes as the U.S. clamps down on Canadian visits requiring background checks and fingerprints if they plan to stay more than 30 days in Florida.
The Canadian flag flies proudly next to the U.S. flag at the Heritage Community in North Fort Myers. It's to represent the dozens of Canadians who call this home. However, many Canadians say theyre considering selling their properties and not returning to Florida, and some businesses say theyre already feeling the impact.
It's estimated each year more than 60,000 Canadians flock to Florida each year. ................(more)

Canadians, please know that most Americans despise Trump for this. And please help us fight. The way you do that is to close your wallets. Do not buy American or vacation here!

(39,110 posts)since last year when Trump was running....selling and going. Used to see lots of Maple Leafs, not now. Lots of vacant places where no one has been. Finances, upkeep and the storms in Florida are fueling it too.

2. Of course they don't think about anything more than the cultural orgasm they get from reviving old, white, Christian, judgmental, punitive Murica. And when the price of eggs and gas go back up they wonder what the hell happened. Fuckin' dopes.

(4,610 posts)Especially for Red states this is good way to kick ass and make a statement. My wife are doing this domestically buying as little as possible from large corporations and not travelling to Red states or zones. Trying to shift necessary buys to mom and pops and locally based businesses.

(12,004 posts)We're going to see the effects of Agent Orange's nonsense this summer as Canadians in particular cancel en masse their vacation plans to American ocean communities. Europeans have put out warnings to their own citizens to avoid the United States due to risks of deportation.
During long hot, humid summers, I spent a good portion of my childhood on Brigantine Island, NJ. Even 'back in the day,' Canadians were frequent visitors and summer residents spending money on lodging, restaurants and entertainment. Small, coastal communities will be ravaged economically without their foreign guests.
As one of my aunts who was a full-time resident on the Island always said:
If we don't make it during the summer, we don't make it at all.

(18 posts)To me it is not a bad thing if some people are leaving and others are not coming. Florida is way over crowded Far too many people for the fragile eco system. The state is also water limited. The Floridan Aquifer is being depleted faster than it can be replenished due to too much drawn down.
When I was a teenager and young adult back in the 1960s you could drive for miles down I-4 and not hardly see another vehicle. Nowadays is backed up from Tampa to Daytona Beach.
a sense, but that means much less money coming into the state from snowbirds and vacationers. More stores I would think will close, no money for basics like fire and police, road maintenance etc.
