She was placed on a hybrid plan...Medicare and Medicaid at the beginning of the this year...she has been informed she needs to get part B in Medicare plan for meds...how it is not the time to change plans and how exactly can she do this...we have called the social worker and will see what happens.
My accountant daughter paid for the meds. Thank God. Can I get a Fuck Trump, fuck Elon Musk and and every Democratic Senator who voted to give Musk the power to do such things ...this happened because Democrats approved the Republican bill. primrary as many as we can...yeah you have to vote for the Democrat in the General but we can vote for a different Democrat in the primary.

(323 posts)Healthcare is going to get so screwed up. I hope she gets help through another state program.
I take a thyroid medication and for some reason none of my health insurance companies I have had, or have now, cover it. Right now, because I live below the poverty line, I get it covered through the state of Washington, otherwise it would cost me over $100/month.

(225 posts)But most plans want you to have part B then they set you up with a part D drug plan. Many will not let you have D without B. The cost of B does come out of social security benefit check

(21,134 posts)Part B provides outpatient/medical coverage. Part D provides prescription drug coverage.
At least that's how it works with "regular" Medicare. I don't know anything about Medicare/Medicaid hybrid plans, but I would presume it's the same.
The whole Medicare setup is confusing as hell, and I wish your daughter all the luck in the world navigating it!

(28,912 posts)The part D drug plans available all expect you to have parts A and B.

(3,071 posts)I am on Medicare & BCBS Federal. Last year Blue Cross changed their prescription program to go through Medicare Part D. They told us it would be a completely seamless transition.
I found out otherwise the first time I tried to renew my anti-rejection meds. They were denied under Medicare Part D, but after some calls, I found out I would need to order it under my Medicare Part B. I was sent a letter stating I was approved for this until 2039, which I am sure I will not be around by then.
I still pay monthy BCBS premiums to cover my remaining prescription needs. BCBS is making out like a fat rat on me.

(363 posts)Sorry about your daughter but none of this would have ever happened if registered Democrats voted, and people did not vote for the GOP Senators, house reps, Governors, state reps and others who enabled this. I get the anger. Direct it in the right direction. Often and loudly.

(20 posts)The daughter is a "Dual Eligible" meaning she had Medicare & Medicaid. Not all states cover Rx in their Medicaid programs.
Most of the time if a person is on Medicaid they qualify for "Extra Help" (LIS) which makes prescriptions very affordable.
Extra Help is a federal program, and I would encourage here to apply.
Depending on where you live she may be able to get on a D-SNP plan which has rich health and Rx befits.
More information about Extra Help is here

(11,413 posts)My sister fell for "savings" of a Medicare Advantage plan, and then Qualified for Medicaid + a Medicare subsidy, but those things only "work" if you have CLASSIC Medicare A, B, and D.
Medicare Advantage is a rip off and will get worse as they fuck with it even more.

(1,854 posts)I need to take the brand name for my antiseizure medication as generics can vary wildly on the amount of active ingredient in them. For years I have ordered my medication from an online Canadian Pharmacy. You must make sure they are legit, you can google how to do this. My medication is almost $1000 a month in the US, the same medication--which comes to me in the sealed manufacturer's box--is less than $200 for a 3-month supply from the online Canadian Pharmacy.
You can see if the medication is available via the pharmacy website and how much it costs. Certain medications cannot be purchased from an online Canadian pharmacy. Any controlled substance, for example, cannot be purchased from a Canadian pharmacy.

(1,854 posts)Here is an article on finding a safe pharmacy from The People's Pharmacy website:
https://www.peoplespharmacy.com/articles/how-can-you-find-a-legitimate-canadian-pharmacy
From this article is a link to CIPA certified Canadian Pharmacies:
https://www.cipa.com/cipa-safe-pharmacies
You will need to get a hard copy of your prescription so you can FAX it to whichever Canadian Pharmacy you use. In my case, I always get a call from the Canadian pharmacy pharmacist to ask if I have any changes in medications I'm taking or any new medical conditions that aren't on record before they will process my prescription.

(24,495 posts)I just chose a random pharmacy from your link above and see that my thyroid med is $35 for a three month supply. Cash price at Costco here in the US is $100 for three months. If I use my insurance its $140 for a three month supply.

(1,854 posts)I was just going to look up Synthroid myself as at my next appointment I plan to ask my doctor about getting on thyroid medication. My TSH test 3 months ago was 5, which is higher than the normal range, but before I got my levels checked I've been having symptoms of weight gain (even though my diet hasn't changed and I still run every day), brittle nails, tired all the time, and tinnitus. That last part, tinnitus, is really bugging me and I never connected it to possible low thyroid. Apparently, there is a connection.
Anyway, you did my work for me and already looked it up, lol.

(11,699 posts)fuck you to each and every person responsible for this lousy thing we call medical insurance in this country and for your daughter's plight in particular at this moment in time. The MFers are all diabolically insane and belonged in mental institutions years ago. And I'm not just throwing out convenient platitudes. I'm serious as a fucking heart attack. Hybrid, my ass. A deadly old-fashioned shell game is what they pulled on your daughter. Check with your State and see if they have a program for folks who can't afford these exorbitant drug prices. In my state, there is a program called "Extra Help" for situations like this.

(16,885 posts)both Medicare and Medicaid, at least in Pennsylvania, that Medicaid pays the enrollee's Medicare premiums. I assume that's Part B and Part D since Part A has no premium.

(50,585 posts)15 years ago, I lost my hybrid Medicare/Medicaid plan. In New Hampshire I made just a small amount too much to qualify for New Hampshire's version of Medicaid, so I had to pay for private drug coverage which I could barely afford and that never paid one dime toward any of my prescriptions. I finally had to cancel it.
Meanwhile, I've been prescribed some medications that the drug plan did not cover and that I could not afford. I finally found several overseas drug companies that were much cheaper. Right now I'm on an inhaler that costs $650.00 a month in the states, but I've found it for about $140.00 overseas. It was literally life-saver. I hate private insurance, even those through Medicare Advantage. They are intentionally complicated and often difficult to work with.
I'm so sorry for what your daughter is going through. These people who make such decisions arbitrarily have little or no concept how profoundly they affect other people's lives. I hate these people.

(5,947 posts)You are completely wrong that this happened because Democrats approved the Republican bill. If they were going to do this, they would have done it anyway during a shutdown. You're right to be angry, but direct you anger at the right place. Democrats had nothing to do with this (unless you want to blame Democrats who didn't vote for Harris back in November).

Similar to the Vietnam War opposition. By 1970 everyone knew someone who had lost a family member, and the sentiment among the silent majority shifted.
Stories like Demrule86 will have the same effect. I think as soon as the first Social Security checks are late the tide will change and the we will be on offense again.
