The average Dane making $47,000 a year is taxed at 45%, rising to 52% for those making over $67,000 a year. Most Danes feel that is worth it considering what it pays for

Although we do have a local bakery that makes them probably just as good, so I might just have to make a diversion on my way to work tomorrow.

(88 posts)It would be great if we could get these types of policies passed but they can't pass. What would happen to profits of hospitals and banks ( college loans) and businesses (giving employees time off work). And because it would mean everyone pays taxes to cover these it would never ever fly with the rich and corporations. I think we are to deep in pure capitalism to ever reverse course.

Oopsie Daisy
(5,513 posts)And with an all or nothing philosophy, we always end up with nothing. It's always better to do what we can (even if it's not perfect) as long as it brings us closer to the ultimate goal. Our representatives know how to count votes and a "public option" was never going to get the votes needed. It was a poison pill. We did the best we could do and everyone should be proud of that, instead of shitting on it because it wasn't "perfect". Let's build on it. I'm eager to see what Bernie's legislation is that will allow us to do that. His laundry list of complaints won't solve themselves. His wish-list won't magically appear. Someone needs to write the legislation, and he seems very interested and motivated. Where's the legislation? I'm eager to support whatever he comes up with. Let's do this!
Emile
(33,431 posts)you should know nothing has a chance in hell of passing without party unity. Now we need to convince the centrists to back what our man Bernie has been saying for years.
On September 13, 2017, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced a parallel bill in the United States Senate, with 16 co-sponsors. The act would establish a universal single-payer health care system in the United States.
Oopsie Daisy
(5,513 posts)That's partially true but rather a simplistic characterization.
>> Now we need to convince the centrists to back what our man Bernie has been saying for years.
Rather than waiting-and-waiting to "convince the centrists" to go all-in on "Bernie's" plan

People who wait for perfection or who think that nothing can be accomplished until there are no more "evil" centrists

Let's see what Bernie's plan is for that. Rather than using his position to lecture Democrats on what we oughta be doing with a laundry list of shoulda-woulda-coulda, I think that he's in a perfect position to actually make a difference himself.
He can work with his many friends in the Senate to come up with something (anything) that helps to build on the ACA and to make it better and stronger. You'd like that, right? You're not opposed to that, are you?
Sadly, I think that too many people would rather wait for perfection (and have nothing in the meantime). As I've always pointed out, the prevalent all-or-nothing philosophy is a losing one. It's not the "evil" centrists

Let's see some legislation that actually has a chance of passing. Let's see some real-world coalition building that reflects the reality of today's political climate. That's the real hold-up.
The bill you mentioned was EIGHT years ago. It didn't go very far, did it? Why not? What's been done to rewrite, change, adjust things since then? What has been done to find the parts that CAN be agreed upon and implement those? After all, something is better than nothing, right? A little improvement here and there is better than NOTHING while sit around and wait and wait and wait for all of the "evil" centrists

(5,513 posts)I think it's a bit unrealistic to expect everything all at once. This is, has been, and will always be a slow process of incremental gains. Sadly, too many are willing to settle for nothing simply because it's not perfect or ideal... and in their minds, ONLY perfect will do... rather than seeing that the incremental steps and improvements are moving us closer and closer to "perfect".
Elleng, are you suggesting that we just "wait" for the perfect crop of legislators to be elected and THEN move forward on this? I can't write the legislation. Someone must do it. Bernie seems to be interested in this subject, so where is his legislation? Where are his co-sponsors? Who has he teamed-up with?
We could do a little now, and a little later... along-along... building and growing. OR, we could do as you're suggesting... just wait until "we the people act" and elect the perfect slate of legislators who'll get it all done all at once.
Sounds nice. But I don't think that's realistic.

Did King Christian X of Denmark Wear a Yellow Star in Support of the Danish Jews?
https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/king-christian-x-of-denmark
No, he did not. According to popular legend, King Christian X of Denmark chose to wear a yellow star in support of the Danish Jews during the German occupation of Denmark.
In another version, the Danish people decided to wear yellow stars. Both of these particular stories are fictional.
In fact, unlike Jews in other countries under German occupation, Jews in Denmark never wore an identification mark such as a yellow star.
The legend conveys an important historical truth, however: both the King and the majority of the Danish people stood by their Jewish citizens and were instrumental in saving almost all of them from Nazi persecution and death.
