Vivek Ramaswamy, President-elect Donald Trump's choice to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with entrepreneur Elon Musk, is expected to soon step away from the task force, CBS News has learned. Ramaswamy intends to announce a campaign for Ohio governor as soon as the end of January, multiple sources confirmed to CBS News.
Ramaswamy, 39, had no comment.
People close to Musk have privately undercut Ramaswamy for weeks, frustrated with his lack of participation in the heavy lifting, according to sources familiar with the internal dynamics. There has been friction between the incoming rank and file DOGE staff and Ramaswamy, the sources said, and Ramaswamy has been subtly encouraged to exit.
"Vivek has worn out his welcome," one person close to Trump said.
Ramaswamy recently met with the Ohio's sitting governor, Mike DeWine, about the state's Senate seat left vacant by Vice President-elect JD Vance. But on Friday, DeWine announced he is appointing his lieutenant governor to the post.

I'm sure it rankled Elon to think that someone from an inferior race should be treated as a peer.

(189,977 posts)There will be lots of money and Trump support (unless Elon changes what people on certain areas get to see) but hows he going to play with the rank and file Ohio Repubs?
He was born in Cincinnati. Monotheistic Hindu too.

(1,539 posts)Having grown up in Ohio and seeing how much more racist it has become over the years there is no way in hell they'd vote for him as Gov.
Having said that I'm glad he's out of the Federal picture.

Musk, the tech tycoon and Donald Trump confidant, made it known that he wanted Ramaswamy out of DOGE in recent days, according to three people familiar with Musks preferences who, like others for this article, were granted anonymity to discuss them. An ill-received holiday rant on X by Ramaswamy about H-1B visas apparently hastened his demise.
Just 69 days after Trump announced the team, Ramaswamy is now leaving DOGE and planning to announce a run for Ohio governor next week. Musks ability to ice out Ramaswamy, who for a variety of reasons had irked some Republicans in Trumps circle, is the latest sign of his influence in the incoming administration. And it presages an encore of all of the infighting that marked Trumps first term.
Ramaswamy just burned through the bridges and he finally burned Elon, said a Republican strategist close to Trump advisers. Everyone wants him out of Mar-a-Lago, out of D.C.
One main reason for some Republicans frustration with Ramaswamy was a post he made on X during a discussion of H-1B visas. In late December, Ramaswamy criticized American culture, saying that tech companies hire foreign workers in part because of a mindset in the country that has venerated mediocrity over excellence.
