I've been a fan of theirs since 1965 and listen to their music to this day. I follow their former lead singer Mark Lindsay (a fellow Democrat and cat lover) on Twitter and Instagram.
Mark Lindsay just posted this, and I wanted to share it:

Elon Musks PAC thought it would be cute to call the female Presidential candidate a C-Word. This is my last post on X. I wont support misogyny. Find me at http://marklindsay.com or on FB.

(46,649 posts)After KICKS, I always assumed he was pretty conservative. Good to be wrong about that.

(71,951 posts)How does KICKS tie in?
I must have missed something.
I honestly don't understand why thar made you think he was a conservative.
I never gave it much thought either way.

(71,951 posts)I see it as more a warning against excess. Yeah, excess drugs, but not "Just Say No" rhetoric.
I buy what you're selling but I can't associate it Nancy Reagan because she did that nonsense nearly 20 years later.
Besides, my favorite song bybthem was Hungry because of the growl/snarl Mark used to sing it.
So, I paid less attention to Kicks.

(3,833 posts)Their song "Kicks" is in homage to their anti-drug stand. A video of the band performing 'Kicks" shows Paul gleefully playing the keyboards and wearing his Revolutionary War styled hat.

(25,193 posts)the counterculture movement equates with liberal values. I use the present tense regarding counterculture because it is still an ongoing movement on the far right.
A.lot of us used weed, called pot back then, at parties or on occasion just on our own without becoming potheads or moving on to other drugs. I am not bashing potheads, just pointing out that the connection between drugs and liberal politics does not always hold up.
There were Boomers of the counterculture movement who supported civil rights regarding race, ethnicity, and women, opposed the war in Vietnam, and opposed the draft. But there were many who identified with the counterculture because they were rugged individualist, Ayn Rand types who opposed authority and favored Libertarianism. They are today's Boomers who are MAGAs. They despise liberal views, don't give a damn about equality, and never did. Many of them took their first steps into counterculture with support for Goldwater in 1964.
I did not see Kicks as a conservative or anti liberal song. To me, it was about compassionate concern for people who were going off the rails through drugs and losing sight of their own personal identity and direction.

(446 posts)Mt parents took us out to dinner at the revolving restaurant on top of the Holiday Inn in Baltimore.
It was next door to the old Baltimore Arena where the band was performing.
They came into the restaurant in full colonial costumes, tricorner hats and all.
My early brush with celebrity. The memory lingers, lo these many years.

(3,980 posts)They were from the Boise ID area, and played at Lagoon (Utah fun park) quite a few times while I lived there.
Most of my friends and my sister worked at Lagoon, so I got into the events for free. Loved them then, still do.
After I married, I found one of her younger cousins in the Boise area used to jam with them when they were working on songs. He never played with them in a show, but knew the whole band.
Small world.
