My wife, a Republican, has decided to vote for the Democrats. TLDR: I put her quote at the bottom of this post.
She has never voted for a Democrat. She voted for Trump twice. She soured on him big time in his first term and was already fed up with him by the 2020 election, but voted for him again because she walked the party line. And then he pulled everything he did after the election and she said she'd never vote for him again. She supported a different candidate in the GOP primary.
We were on a walk tonight and for the first time, she said she was voting for the Democrats. I asked her why and here's what she said:
"He scares me. I think he is fundamentally evil. I hate that he creates chaos and division and divides the country. He breeds hatred. He uses his supporters as guard dogs and gets them all riled up, while they're on a leash and then points and tells them who he wants attacked, and they attack. It's dangerous. He's beyond narcissistic. He's power hungry and will do anything to get power and keep it. The Republicans are scared of him and will do whatever he says. None of them will stand up to him and do what's right. He divides us to gain power. He intentionally puts people in danger because he wants more power. That's pure evil."

(2,036 posts)Unfortunately, it is not used nearly as often as it should be. As far as I'm concerned, every single discussion of Trump and/or MAGA Republicans in general should include the phrase "Pure Fucking Evil"

(68,446 posts)The one good thing I can say about Trump is that he turned her from a conservative Christian Republican into a liberal Democratic atheist.
She started voting for the Democratic candidate back in 2008, even though she actually admired John McCain. But she loathed Sarah Palin. She voted to re-elect Barack Obama in 2012, and voting proudly and enthusiastically for Hillary Clinton in 2016. When her church refused to denounce Trump's feculently un-Christian behavior, she was done with Christianity for good.

But, I guess Republicans used to be normal people....at some point in the past.

(13,743 posts)Given she voted for him twice, I wont hold my breath that she fully grasps what she, herself, is saying and hold all Republican candidates accountable. Trump could have been made a footnote in history years ago had the GOP not put party ahead of country.

(1,751 posts)I can't believe how cogent she is for a former Trump voter. But she is proof that his ever increasing insanity is having an effect on former supporters.
He'll continue to get worse. It will wear some people away. I don't believe everyone has decided and can't switch. We've never seen this level of political malpractice, vengeance, incompetence, and just plain laziness in a presidential nominee before. There has never been a self-proclaimed dictator, and some low-information voters will catch on late.
Kamala and Walz are still pretty new and on fire. We aren't hoping for the 40%, we just need another 5%.

(13,900 posts)reasoning for voting for him twice previously? How did she come to the realization she shouldn't vote for him? Was it J6, his displays of lunacy, getting in bed w the nazis or his dangerous rhetoric to incite violence?

(1,751 posts)5% in the wing states will give us the election. Might even be a landslide. But I'd prefer 10% to overcome the coup that will follow and for all of our stress levels.

(90 posts)I glad she has, for the moment at least, seen the light. It took much too long, but ok... peace. I always thought tsf was a buffoon who was totally unfit to be President but didn't think he was particularly dangerous. When he came down the escalator and started talking about how the migrants were murderers and rapist, I started worrying. I know enough history to know there is always a willing audience for that drek.

(4,107 posts)To a person that voted for Trump would be like and how it would impact the marriage.
I cant imagine having a meaningful conversation when both parties are on such opposite sides of the political spectrum, especially with someone like Trump.
I long for the days of the McCain, Romneys and even Bush(s) because at least there wouldnt be the cauldron of hate. But Trump, is a marriage license too far.
I would be in the position of questioning everything that I knew about my spouse and maybe, even myself.
Glad I am not in that situation
.although, I guess, Love conquers all.

What am I saying? Of course she will. Because none of them will have really learned a goddam thing.
