Something the SCOTUS can't undo.

(33,697 posts)At minimum - I want it introduced. The bill can fail - but the Democratics need to try.

(44,727 posts)It would take a constitutional amendment to impose such a prohibition on who can run for President. And it would require 2/3 of the House and the Senate to start the amendment process.
So, not a chance of it happening.

And I think I could get Senator Booker to try.
He's in an extremely safe Senate seat -and sometimes he plays the smartass quite well. Especially if the GOP tries to pull another 1/6.
No more politics as usual. If Harris wins, we keep the Senate, and take back the House -
Everything needs to be on the table.
I also understand that Booker has made sure Kim is extremely cognizant of the SALT Cap expiration - and nothing budget gets passed with it in the IRS Code.
I know I know I know . . . that's not playing nice. That's not paying attention to the numbers.
I'm over that - and paying property taxes twice in NJ the past five years. Its not nice. So what.

(10,879 posts)I don't think this is an amendment that should be proposed (my other post to OP), but the process can start with Congress. It can also go the other way with 2/3 of the states requesting one by a convention for that purpose.

Such a thing would be abused, a lot.

(39 posts)They have that law in Russia.
So every time there is a candidate against Putin, he has them charged and jailed.
Imagine how a crooked Texas (or any other Confederate State) prosecutor would abuse this.
Imagine how a biased crooked Supreme Court would abuse this....
If the system was fair, lifetime mobster and convicted felon tRump would already be in jail.
Meanwhile, Hunter Biden is being punished harshly for being convicted for charges that would be a hand-slap for anyone else.

(10,879 posts)Should having a felony conviction disqualify? Maybe. However, if you believe (1) it is possible for a person who committed a major crime to find a path to an inspired life -- and I do -- or (2) wrongful convictions happen, you probably don't want to go this route.
As I think about it, you would think that it would be logical for a state that denies felons the right to vote would support such an amendment, but I'm guessing we would see the opposite, with states that deny felons the right to vote being just fine with a felon president.

(1,049 posts)Felons cant serve in the military, how is it possible they can run for the presidency. But I would include ANY Federal, State, or Local Government (to include city and county) office
