I don't care what strategies he thinks are playing out, the sentencing should have occurred and Dump should be doing his time right now pending an appeal. This is what is supposed to happen to criminals. This is why people are losing faith in our system. It doesn't strengthen anyone's resolve on either side of the political spectrum by doing it the wrong way - but he did it anyway. I have zero respect for this decision.

(11,920 posts)This way he cannot. He is still a convicted 34 times felon.

(5,494 posts)He's certainly dangerous enough to deny a bond.

(44,772 posts)There is no chance he would be imprisoned pending appeal of a non-violent felony conviction that even many legal experts feel is not slam dunk safe from being reversed.

You have a point, but I for one am very happy it is playing out this way. With the delay, SCOTUS can't get their hands on it and give him a get out of jail free card before the election (and thus give him "I was exonerated" ammo).
If we somehow fail to turn out enough voters to defeat him, and if SCOTUS doesn't give him a get out of jail free card, he might at least spend a little time in the hoosegow (until January 20th that is -- perhaps he'd be sworn in behind bars because he can't pardon himself until he's sworn in).

Maybe he pushed it past the election to not give Trump a win before the election

(5,494 posts)Just that I didn't like it. But you can be snide if you like.
Fiendish Thingy
(18,680 posts)Which implies you think Merchan is incompetent, feeble, or mentally ill (which is ironic, since he runs a weekly mental health court to determine competency, conservatorship, etc.)
If you dont like a court ruling, policy, etc., then state your disagreement without personally attacking the person- to do so weakens the strength of your position.

(10,005 posts)this particular delay does not bother me at all. As others have said, there are some advantages.

(3,092 posts)I actually AM pissed that Trump's bond was never revoked, though. He should have gotten pretrial detention for the documents case at very least, and especially after he started violating gag orders.
He was essentially being treated like a king even before SCOTUS practically ruled that is one.
We need a new constitutional amendment stripping the right of felons to hold public office, and removing secret service protection from any politician who has been indicted. If you aren't even allowed to own a gun, how is it that you can be president and control our nukes?

(51,159 posts)would give the wannabe king the perfect appeal after he loses to Kamala. Plus, I have a feeling the upcoming sentence includes some jail time for Trump and I'm betting Merchan wants to avoid a MAGA war right before the election because if Trump goes to the big house, all hell is going to break loose on the right.

(112,895 posts)If he wins or loses, he cannot be pardoned or his AG cannot drop the state charges against him, is my understanding.
He was ready to appeal, I am certain. That is what he does.
Also, that is why he wanted it moved to Federal Court, so it could be dismissed by his AG if he were to win the next election.
Which he is not going to do.
