31% of Republicans say vaccines are more dangerous than diseases they prevent

Public sentiment on the importance of safe, lifesaving childhood vaccines has significantly declined in the US since the pandemic—which appears to be solely due to a nosedive in support from people who are Republican or those who lean Republican, according to new polling data from Gallup.

In 2019, 52 percent of Republican-aligned Americans said it was "extremely important" for parents to get their children vaccinated. Now, that figure is 26 percent, falling by half in just five years. In comparison, 63 percent of Democrats and Democratic leaners said it was "extremely important" this year, down slightly from 67 percent in 2019.

Overall, only 40 percent of Americans now say it is extremely important for parents to vaccinate their children, down from 58 percent in 2019 and 64 percent in 2001.

I will never understand how the anti-vaccine culture took root. In the mid-20 century people were still dying and becoming disabled from polio outbreaks. Children were born with birth defects because their mothers had contracted Rubella. I know someone whose mother had Rubella while she was pregnant. He was born without a left ear.

The most recent round is rooted in religious malpractice and mass confirmation bias. I, personally, think it has a lot to do with the HPV vaccine which came out in the mid-2000’s.

You see, it has something to do with * whispers * sex.

is not a new thing.

Sadly, the internet and social media has allowed it to metastasize exponentially.

Though Polio has been eradicated in the developed countries, it still exists in less developed countries and there’s no reason to think it won’t find its way back into an unvaccinated world

My hospital experience says about a 50:50 split of anti-vaxxers between right and left, though I haven’t run across any data in a brief search
