Amanda Marcotte attended Sen. J.D. Vances (R-OH) campaign event in Philadelphia yesterday and noted one upside: There was no line to use the ladies room.
Vances event was small, mean, and yes, weird, featuring the unjustified sarcasm of the candidate and a desperate feeling reminiscent of the mood at a strip mall shot bar at 2 a.m. on ladies night.'
There was one kind of diversity in this small but weirdly intense crowd
Every type of white man that gets a hasty swipe left on his dating profile was in attendance.

(223 posts)Let's make JDs life miserable.
Refer to JD as Couch and Gov. Walz as Coach-- and ask, "When are you going to debate?"
That's my new nickname for him. I came up with it by accident. I have quirky hearing and often mishear a word here and there. When Walz said Vance's name in his speech yesterday, for a nanosecond I thought he said the word "shady." Then the word "Vance" registered with me, and I decided I liked the pun!

(849 posts)I'm not sure I get the beard focus, though. So many people with facial hair are on the left and center. It seems like an unproductive line of attack for us.
But this is great stuff. Those people can't take being laughed at. It erodes their support because their supporters are looking for a strongman duo, not a punchline. There was a great article about the effectiveness of this nonviolent but confrontational approach that includes some great stuff about the Coup Clutz Clowns, too

(18,208 posts)I like beards in general. I think they look good on a lot of people, including my husband (and yes, even Vance - his beard is nicely groomed, and it makes his doughy face look less doughy ).
But the quote about "men with enormous beards that have never known the touch of a trimmer" cracked me up. Apologies to ZZ Top, but I really don't care for that look.

(54 posts)Neckbands is shorthand for usually young, very misogynistic (and usually white mwn) who are unkempt, poorly groomed and yet think that women should cater to them and any that doesnt is an ugly (fill in the blank). Neckbeards tend to resort to negging (insulting a woman to take her down a leg) and are basement-dwelling losers. Vance is king of the neckbeard faction, though he is moderately better groomed than they tend to be.

The entire article was a great description of the Star Wars bar scene that has come to define Team Trump.

(21,262 posts)Vance was a corporal in the Marines, Walz was a Sergeant Major in the Army National Guard.
Going to be a weird dynamic for a corporal to try to disrespect the highest rank for an enlisted man he's ever encountered.I know it's different branches, but still.
I say this because I work with a lot of ex military. A good friend was a Captain in the Air Force, and he has people we've worked with who were under his command in the Air Force, he mentored some and helped them follow him here. Those guys are good friends and there is a lot of crap talking between them for fun, buit whenever the crap hits the fan, they start calling him sir.
Command Sergeant Major is a big effing deal to any enlisted man. It will be interesting to see how Vance treats it.

(6,915 posts)My favorite part "One upside to the Vance event: There was no line to use the ladies' room. Sure, there were women in attendance, but the gender ratio felt like the guest list on Joe Rogan's podcast. There was one kind of diversity in this small but weirdly intense crowd. Every type of white man that gets a hasty "swipe left" on his dating profile was in attendance: 'Roided out dudes with bad tribal tattoos. Older men radiating "bitter divorce" energy. Men with enormous beards that have never known the touch of a trimmer. Skinny fascists wearing expensive suits, despite the oppressive heat. Glowering loners staring at the two women under 40 like cats watching birds out a window. "
