Republicans don't "love" him, but they would be hard-pressed to vote against his confirmation.
He'd probably do worse as a candidate in 2016...I don't think he'll run again
He's up to date on Asian politics, and speaks Chinese.
Huntsman has already had one appointed position in the Obama admin, as Ambassador to China. I think he would do it again.
It's the easy way out for everyone.. He could appoint Rice as his deputy sec of state, and Kerry could hold onto the MA senate seat.
Obama looks magnanimous, and I think that having a man follow might be a good choice, especially when so much diplomacy will be done in societies that might pay more attention to "suggestions" coming from a man.. as a Mormon, he might also be viewed as more of an impartial person when it comes to Middle east issues.
We have had Albright, Rice & Clinton in recent years, and it may be time to have a man in that position..

(80,708 posts)So he's marginally better than the room temperature IQ (thanks for that expression, repeatedly-banned troll! you know who you are.) that most GOP Pols either have or must adopt as a pose to win primaries.
That said, a Republican SOS? Not just no, but FUCK NO. Aside from the fact that we have lots of well-qualified people in our party and OBAMA WON so why the fuck do we need to look "magnanimous", but, the SOS is the first non-elected position in line of succession for the Presidency and...
wait, you're kidding, aren't you.

(20,600 posts)It would be unexpected and throw the republicans for a loop. And the guy has extensive experience in diplomacy and is someone who is sharp. K&R

(2,730 posts)I think the Secretary of State should be a Democrat and not some ex Republican Presidential candidate and especially one from Utah. This position is too important in the President's cabinet. I don't think the Democrats should just pick somebody to appease Republicans either. Just when has the Republican Party selected a Democratic Secretary of State? The whole idea is ridiculous. And President Obama already has enough Republicans in the Intelligence agency. You just as well give the whole Administration to the other Party.

I think Hillary has been doing a superlative job, and her "suggestions" are taken as seriously as they would be if they were coming from a male U.S. Secretary of State.

(31,706 posts)This is the most demanding job short of doing a tour in Afghanistan. It's constant traveling and dealing with one crisis or another. You could see how its taken its toll on SOS Clinton and on others...a reason why few Secretaries stay beyond 4 years. Forget much of a family or personal life...you're on yet another flight or have to prepare for another round of negotiations. It requires a very healthy and strong person to cope with the pressures.
I was supportive of Amb. Rice but now have reservations based on the articles about her Canadian oil company holdings. I want to know more but I was very disappointed with what I've read so far. As far as Huntsman...I actually think it might be a good choice. He's young and healthy enough for the challenges of the job and from his past history as Ambassador to China will put the country first and foremost. I know there's the push for Senator Kerry...but I think the administration is now leery of playing into rushpublican hands and may just pass on him for either State or Defense...for now.
