Donald Trump and Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen endorsed legislation that would take Omahas potentially decisive electoral vote out of play for Democrats, hours after conservative activist Charlie Kirks Tuesday X post suggesting it.
In just 200 words, Kirk urged Republicans to repeal the states 1991 law that assigned two electors to the winner of the state, and one for each of its three congressional districts. Republicans easily carried Nebraska in every subsequent election, but in 2008 and 2020, the Omaha-based 2nd District voted Democratic.
Nebraskans should call their legislators and their governor to demand their state stop pointlessly giving strength to their political enemies, wrote Kirk.
Five hours and 10 minutes later, Pillen put out a statement supporting a bill that would convert the state to a winner-take all system in November. Donald Trump weighed in early Tuesday evening, praising Pillens very smart letter in a Truth Social post.

All Mixed Up
(597 posts)Each state is allowed to allocate their electoral votes this way. Only two do: Nebraska and Maine.
I actually wish Maine would do this. It would make that Nebraska EV irrelevant. Trump has won an electoral vote out of Maine in each of the last two elections and will likely do so again in November.
Regardless, it's not likely to pass.

(13,286 posts)will no one else venture to point out that the way NE and ME go about this - actually represents an improvement on democratic process - over the more conventional winner take all system?
None the less - if NE were to go back to winner take all - that would only put them in line with the vast majority of their contemporaries. And hardly representing anything like a 'coup'.

(942 posts)In practice gerrymandering would be 10 times worse, given the makeup of the districts would also influence the EV.

(1,311 posts)Maine and their Democratic-unified government can do the same thing and make it moot. Will just make it easier on Biden to not have to spend money and time in the Kansas-City metro TV market to chase 1 electoral vote.
Oh, and I'm sure those markets will be very very happy with their state government taking that money out of their pockets.
