I’d say Trump, while in the White House, probably walked past one of the former First Lady’s famous red Christmas trees and saw a “Be Best” ornament. That moment probably had a profound impact and made Trump want to praise somebody. He chose Hitler.

When you’re a star, they let you do it.

In the final months and weeks, Goering tried to negotiate with the Allies, so did Himmler prompting the fuhrer to cut them both off from his circle. Rommel was suspect and made to commit suicide and don't forget Rudolf Hoss who flew to Scotland to broker a truce.

And I think this is only the surface. The nazis were only interested in saving their own skins. A bit like the republicans.

I don't even want to speculate, being clueless on this matter. And Italy?

Dictators' minds are warped and it's beyond the ability of us supposedly normal people to comprehend. I have made some amateur studies of cults, which help explain our current situation, and fight fascism, but who knows?

All those dictators and our former "Predator" rose because people fell under their spell, and sane people did not prevail. But the camaraderie between these Shitlers is another matter. We saw too much of it with Dolt 45. It's for historians and psychologists to unravel, if they can.

A key element of their takeovers seems to have been taking control of the military. While perhaps not related directly to your question, I do want to thank the US military for standing strong in their oath to uphold the Constitution. Donnie did not join the "club". He was and is all bluster and grift.

Just sayin'.

And then things just progressed along for a couple a hundred years, and it became what it did now lives in our burnt into our collectives minds in living history. But your point is well taken, I agree we need to defer to scholars on this angle with alliance and Hitler.

Such as "Well Hitler had good ideas also..." Just because someone might cite that Hitler had a pet he was kind to doesn't override genocide.

If you're devil's-advocating for Hitler, and trying to paint him in a good light, you're a nazi and/or you're dog-whistling to nazis and bigots and racists...

Hitler, like trump, thought he was the best general. We're lucky in a way that Hitler was Germany's supreme commander because they very well could've won that war.

The British army was cornered at Dunkirk, backs to the sea, when Hitler called off his tanks. That whole army could've been captured.

And then there was the whole invasion of Russia too late in the year, and dividing his forces into 3 commands...hard to call it fortunate for the West, but Hitler made several fatal moves.

Trump then recalled, "Actually, it was my friend Marty Davis from Paramount who gave me a copy of 'Mein Kampf,' and he's a Jew."

Brenner added that Davis did acknowledge that he gave Trump a book about Hitler.

"But it was 'My New Order,' Hitler's speeches, not 'Mein Kampf,'" Davis reportedly said. "I thought he would find it interesting. I am his friend, but I'm not Jewish."

After Trump and Brenner changed topics, Trump returned to the subject and reportedly said, "If, I had these speeches, and I am not saying that I do, I would never read them."
