on most points of the deal
According to a source familiar with the cease-fire/hostage-release negotiations, Israel and Hamas have reached basic agreement on the majority of the deal's terms.
According to the apparent outline, the agreement will last 35 days, during which all Israeli hostages will be released. In exchange, Israel will release Palestinian prisoners and deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
The source added that the criteria for the release of prisoners have already been determined, but their identity is still being debated.
According to the source, the only issue that the parties are unable to bridge is whether a complete cease-fire will be declared as a part of the deal, a Hamas demand that Israel refuses.
They added that "there may be other minor changes in the outline, but the main problem that needs to be solved concerns that absolute cease-fire Hamas insists on."

Thanks, Nanjeanne, for posting.
This will help Joe Biden as far as re-election prospects.

At the end of 35 days, I'd recommend that they not resume hostilities. They'll have no bargaining chips left.
Hopefully this will shut up the "Genocide Joe" BS from the Extreme Left.

(30,182 posts)Last I knew, Hamas wouldn't agree to a 2 month cease fire.
In 2011, Israel released over 1,000 prisoner for one hostage. I think it could be dangerous, but that's just my opinion. I don't live there, but I don't like cleaning up their messes.
I know Hamas wants every single Palestinian prisoner released.
If Netanyahu is gonna be extremely generous with prisoner releases, I have no idea why he is opposed to statehood?

I predict the provisional ruling from the ICJ is not going to be good for Israel tomorrow.

Hamas will release all the Israeli hostages in Gaza if Israel releases all Palestinian prisoners, senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan claims at a news conference in Beirut.

The prisoners Israel holds are terrorists, murderers and criminals.
Its good that Israel is working towards the release of these individuals, but lets be clear about the status of the two sets of prisoners.

(1,966 posts)The prisoners Israel holds are men, women and children, about 2,000 of whom are there simply on suspicion of committing an offense sometime in the future - without charge, disclosed evidence or trial. Some languishing for months or even years with little or no contact with family or their own lawyers. In addition, most of them are there for having shown the audacity to protest their occupation by raising their voices in the political arena, the media or even social media or for attending a political gathering or raising their flag. In other words, exercising what in other democracies would be considered their basic civil rights of free expression, free assembly and free association. Instead, these rights in Israel are criminalized as "incitement to terrorism".
Once charged or detained, they face insurmountable odds against a fair trial with due process. The military courts have a boast-worthy 99.7% conviction rate and practices and military laws that make a guilty sentence virtually guaranteed.
No, they are not all terrorists, murderers and criminals. I venture to say that the large majority did not deserve their imprisonment and in any other democracy would not have been detained let alone convicted. But they live under occupation and that is why they are where they are.
