(17,757 posts)But the laws of unintended consequences makes it unwise to consider such decisions without hindsight. Who in the time would have believed that killing Franz Ferdinand would have led to two brutal world wars the effects of which we are still feeling over 100 years later. It might have seemed like a good idea at the time.

Protecting Ferdinand could have possibly led to the timeline of no WW1, Hitler wouldn't have served, Germany wouldn't have been in a pit of despair, leading to the rise of Hitler and WW2. However, with the treaty system that was in place at the time, Europe was a fused stick of dynamite waiting for a lit match to come along.
