Republicans bragging about red states having a budget surplus?

This is fucking gross 🤮🤢

Red states brag about their budget surpluses but it's because they aren't spending money where it's needed like in public schools that have become literal death traps & filled with raw sewage.

It is a ridiculous law. State is required to refund anything above two percent excess if revenue collections exceed forecasts made two and a half years earlier....rather than salt the funds away in a "rainy day fund" for times when the economy turns south. We have no sales tax, so revenue stream is highly dependent on personal incomes.

Of course, if revenues under-perform forecasts, programs (education, healthcare, law enforcement etc.) MUST DE CUT! We have some of the poorest schools in the country. Our mental health services are an embarrassment. Entire counties have only skeleton police patrols.

It is a ridiculous gimmick locked into the state constitution by Republicans 25 years ago.

Budget surplusses are NOT an indication of MAGA governance success. The booming economy helped red and blue states.
