Third attempt fails to free luxury cruise ship that ran aground in Greenland

Story by JAN M. OLSEN •

Another attempt to pull free a Bahamas-flagged luxury cruise ship carrying 206 people that ran aground in the world’s northernmost national park in Greenland has failed after trying to use the high tide, authorities said.

It was the third attempt to free the MV Ocean Explorer. Earlier this week, the cruise ship made two failed attempts to float free on its own during high tide.

The cruise ship ran aground above the Arctic Circle on Monday in Alpefjord, which is in Northeast Greenland National Park. The park encompasses almost as much land as France and Spain combined, and about 80% is permanently covered by an ice sheet. Alpefjord sits about 150 miles away from the closest settlement, Ittoqqortoormiit, which itself is nearly 870 miles from the country’s capital, Nuuk.

“We do have a couple of cases of COVID, but there’s a doctor on board,” he said, adding that he himself had come down with COVID-19 on the ship.

I just was on a luxury cruise ship in the Mediterranean and we had one tempest at sea. It was not at all bad but that was enough for me, thank you.

That said, to each his/her own. I toast your daring and courage.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The operator of a luxury cruise ship that ran aground in Greenland with 206 people on board said Thursday that the MV Ocean Explorer was “successfully” pulled free by a fisheries research vessel at high tide.

The ship’s owner, Copenhagen-based SunStone Ships, said that it was done “based on a pull from the vessel (owned by the Greenland government) and vessel’s own power. There have not been any injuries to any person onboard, no pollution of the environment and no breach of the hull.” https://www.wral.com/story/third-attempt-fails-to-free-luxury-cruise-ship-mv-ocean-explorer-that-ran-aground-in-greenland/21048131/

I think this is a nice size for a cruise ship. Much better than those floating buildings with thousands of people on board.

A small enough passenger list that they've probably all gotten to know each other by now.

perhaps better to inform the rest of us
