"A
Woman Bought a $4 Painting at a Thrift Store for Its Frame. Now, It’s Been Revealed as an N.C. Wyeth, Worth as Much as $250,000
The painting was identified as the work of iconic American illustrator N.C. Wyeth, thanks to help from a local conservator.

Sometimes a frame is worth more than a picture. That was the hope of one woman as she searched through a stack of old frames during a trip to Savers, a thrift shop in New Hampshire a few years ago.

Among the old posters and damaged prints, a framed dusty painting stood out, and the woman bought it for $4. After she did some brief research online and failed to identify the work, she stored it in closet. There, it was quickly forgotten about until May of this year, when the woman stumbled across the painting during a spring clean and decided to post the work on the Facebook group “Things Found in Walls.”....(more)

3. We found a Nancy Jurs raku piece in a local Goodwill years back...

Her and Wendell Castle both have/had working studios in our small village in a suburb of western New York; so it wasn’t too surprising; however a windfall on a piece we ordinarily probably wouldn’t have purchased otherwise (several hundred dollars generally for this particular piece.)

I’m still waiting to find an Albert Paley in a Goodwill; however that’s probably a stretch…

4. Reminds me of when a truck driver bought a painting at a thrift shop for $5

It turned out to be an original Jackson Pollack and have a value of around $50 million.

Then there was the Picasso that was bought at a yard sale.

Paid like $2 for it, and it turned out to be several million dollars.

Evidently things like this happen more frequently than one realizes.

5. Sadly the Pollack was never authenticated.

The evidence was overwhelming, same paints he used, even a Pollock thumb print on it, but the art world is full of snobs.

6. It's not like it used to be, but there are still treasures in the thrift stores and outlets!
